    Etymology: Formation like κλ-όνος (from κέλομαι(?); cf. also χρόνος and Κρόνος), from a verb `hold, support, bear', seen e. g. in Skt. perf. dā̆dhā́ra (would be Gr. *τέ-θορ-α), in the athem. root aor. dhr̥-thās (2. sg.), perhaps also in ἐν-θρ-εῖν φυλάσσειν H. (s. θρησκεύω); θρόνος would then be prop. "supporter, bearer". Greek relatives are: θόρναξ ὑποποδιον. Κύπριοι. η ἱερὸν Άπόλλωνος ἐν τῃ̃ Λακωνικῃ̃ H., prob. for *θρόναξ through metathesis and so directly derived from θρόνος. Forms with θρᾱ- are too far away: θρή-σασθαι with θρᾶ-νος (s. v.), θρῆ-νυς; θρά̄-σκω with θρησκεύω (s. v.); there is no indication that they have enything to do with θρόνος. - Representatives in other languages, e. g. Lat. ferē, frētus, firmus, Skt. caus. dhāráyati, dhárma- `right, custom', dháraṇa- `holding', give nothing new for Greek. More forms Pok. 252f., W.-Hofmann s. firmus, ferē, Mayrhofer s. dhāráyati. - However, Greek has no forms in - ον-ος, only - ων, - ων-ος and - ων, - ον-ος (Chantr. Form. 159ff); there is no certain instance of IE - ον-ος (as opposed to roots with o-vocalism, like βρόμ-ος); on the other hand most Greek words in - ον-ος are suspected to be of Pre-Greek origin; also there is no word for `chair' derived from the root * dher- (Pok. 252f, nor is there any Greek substantive which is certainly derived from this root (Pok. 252). So we can be rather certain that this word is Pre-Greek.

    Origin: LW [a loanword which is (probably) not of Pre-Greek origin] Eur.
    Etymology: With σπίζω cf. τρίζω a. o., to which σπίζα. The form σπίνος has perh. assimilated itself to the adj. σπινός `meager', as Swed. spink as birdname cannot be separated from spink(e) `meager man', spink `scrap'. The other forms including σπίζω, σπίζα can, with the exception of πίγγαν, be derived from a common σπιγγ-, so that they differ only through the anlaut. σ- from the Germanic name of the finch, OHG fincho, OE finc, PGm. *fink(i̯)an-, * finki-. (Here may be adduced with aspiration Skt phiṅgaka- m. `the strangler with forked tail' (Germ.: der gabelschwänziger Würger) (Lex.)). Original sonnection is therefore possible; on the other hand these words were clearly exposed so several associations and following transformations, so that a phonetical and undisturbed genealogy becomes impossible. For Greek one was reminded except of σπινός also of σπιγνόν μικρόν, βραχύ and σπίκανον σπάνιον; s. Persson Beitr. 1, 402 f. (also 1, 266 n. 3) with extensive treatment of the Germanic words and rather quick rejection of a rather obvious onomatop. origin. Details w. lit. in WP. 2, 682 (Pok. 999). - The connection with Germanic may go back to a European substratum word, or a `Wanderwort'; there are no indications for a Pre-Greek word. The variations can in no way be understood.

    προεπιλακτίζω 1 aor. mid. προεπελακτισάμην. The word προεπελακτίσασθε=‘you have forced me’ Pol 3:1 is Zahn’s restoration of the text on the basis of four different Gk. readings that are alike in that they yield no sense. Until now the word is not attested lexically; neither is ἐπιλακτίζειν nor προλακτίζειν. The form προεπεκαλέσασθε, preferred by Lghtf., Funk, Hilgenfeld, Krüger, Bihlmeyer means ‘you have invited’ or ‘requested’ but it has no more lexical attestation than Zahn’s conjecture. Conversely, ἐπικαλεῖν and προκαλεῖν were in current use and the ‘provocastis’ of the Latin version seems to presuppose it.—DELG s.v. λαξ.

    σπιλάς, άδος, ἡ used metaph. in Jd 12. The interpretation depends on which of two possible mngs. is preferred:
    (s. DELG 1 σπίλο) a rocky hazard hidden by waves, a rock washed by the sea, a (hidden) reef (Hom. et al.; Nicander, Alex. 290; Philostrat., Imag. 2, 13 p. 359, 19; Sb 6160, 1; Jos., Bell. 3, 420). Acc. to the Etymol. Magnum it is characteristic of the σπιλάδες that they cannot be seen, and hence a ship can be wrecked on them before any danger is suspected (αἱ ὑπὸ θάλασσαν κεκρυμμέναι πέτραι; Diod S 3, 44, 4 σπιλάδας ἐνθαλάττους). This type of interpr. is preferred by deWette, Mayor, Wordsworth, Chase, Weymouth, and conditionally by HvSoden, Windisch, REB ‘danger’, NRSV (mg. ‘reefs’). In its favor is the sequence of unfavorable natural phenomena.
    (s. DELG 2 σπίλο) that which soils or discolors, spot, stain (Orpheus, Lithica 614 GHermann=620 Ch-ÉRuelle [1898]: the agate is said to be κατάστικτος σπιλάδεσσι=‘sprinkled w. spots’.
