Un catalogue collectif mondial en ligne est un catalogue collectif utilisé et/ou alimenté par des milliers de bibliothèques et centres de documentation. Le catalogue collectif mondial le plus connu est WorldCat, créé dès 1971 par l’association OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) et devenu au fil des ans une gigantesque base de données bibliographiques. Un autre grand catalogue collectif mondial est le RLG Union Catalog, créé en 1980 par le RLG (Research Library Group, qui devient ensuite Research Libraries Group). Une version web de ce catalogue, appelée RedLightGreen, est mise en accès libre au printemps 2004, avec une version bêta disponible dès l’automne 2003. WorldCat migre aussi sur le web en août 2006, en version bêta, et propose en accès libre non seulement les catalogues des bibliothèques membres mais aussi leurs documents électroniques (livres, articles, photos, musique, vidéos, livres audio). Après trois ans d’activité, RedLightGreen cesse en novembre 2006, et le RLG est intégré à OCLC. -

Fondé en 1970 dans la Silicon Valley, en Californie, le centre de recherche PARC (Palo Alto Research Center) fait d’abord partie du secteur de recherche de Xerox avant de devenir une filiale indépendante en janvier 2002. PARC a toujours été à la pointe de la recherche dans de nombreux domaines. Son optique est de délivrer des applications innovantes destinées au monde de l’industrie. Voici un exemple parmi d’autres. En 1997, des chercheurs de PARC développent une technique d’affichage dénommée gyricon. En décembre 2000, ces mêmes chercheurs créent la société Gyricon Media (rebaptisée ensuite Gyricon) afin de commercialiser un modèle de papier électronique dénommé SmartPaper. 63 RLG Union Catalog
Créé en 1980 par le RLG (Research Libraries Group), RLIN (Research Libraries Information Network, voir la notice suivante) devient en 2003 le RLG Union Catalog. Le RLG Union Catalog est l’un des deux grands catalogues collectifs mondiaux, l’autre étant WorldCat, géré par OCLC (Online Computer Library Center). En 2003, le RLG Union Catalog comprend 126 millions de notices bibliographiques (correspondant à 42 millions de documents: livres, cartes, manuscrits, films, bandes sonores, etc.) émanant de bibliothèques et centres de documentation situés dans 300 pays différents (dépôts d’archives, bibliothèques de musées, bibliothèques universitaires, bibliothèques publiques, bibliothèques de droit, bibliothèques techniques, bibliothèques d’entreprise, bibliothèques d’art, etc.). Utilisé pour le catalogage, le prêt inter-bibliothèques ou encore le contrôle des archives et des manuscrits, ce catalogue collectif regroupe les notices de tous les organismes adhérents, avec si besoin plusieurs notices pour le même document (et non pas une seule notice par document comme dans WorldCat). 370 langues différentes y sont représentées, avec translittération des notices de documents publiés dans les langues JACKPHY (japonais, arabe, chinois, coréen, persan, hébreu et yiddish) et en cyrillique. En 2004, le RLG Union Catalog comprend 130 millions de notices. Au printemps 2004, une version web de ce catalogue est disponible en accès libre sous le nom de RedLightGreen, suite à une phase pilote lancée en automne 2003. Après trois ans d’activité, le site est fermé en novembre 2006, et le RLG est intégré à OCLC. -
