1 Sherman, George
1908-1991Nacido en Nueva York. Ayudante de direccion desde 1932 y director de mas de cien peliculas desde 1937, primero para Republic hasta 1944, mas tarde para Columbia hasta 1948, y despues hasta 1956 para Universal. A medida que pasaba de una productora a otra los presupuestos de sus peliculas iban siendo mas holgados, por lo que no es de extranar que su ultimo western, que es tambien su ultima pelicula, El gran Jack, sea la de presupuesto mas amplio y, dicho sea de paso, la mejor. Sherman es, sin lugar a dudas, uno de los grandes especialistas del western. Una ojeada a su filmografia hace innecesarias otras explicaciones; entre 1937 y 1943 trabaja a un ritmo frenetico para satisfacer las necesidades de algunas de las estrellas del genero, destacando, en particular, su dedicacion a la serie The Three Mes quiteers. 2 Hawks, Howard
1896-1977La aparente ligereza de las peliculas de Howard Hawks es enganosa. Detras de unos filmes que, a primera vista, solo pretenden entretener al espectador, hay mucho mas; mas de lo que pueden ofrecer no pocos directores intelectualmente comprometidos. Por eso, hay que afirmar rotundamente que Howard Hawks es uno de los realizadores mas grandes del cine americano y del cine en general, a la altura de los diez o doce mas ilustres de todos los tiempos. La cosa empezo en el verano de 1916, cuando un joven estudiante de ingenieria, buen de portista, aficionado a los automoviles, decidio aprovechar las vacaciones de verano trabajando en Fa mous Players-Lasky, la futura Paramount, como ascensorista. Un ano despues, ya graduado, vuelve, ahora para colaborar en la produccion como decorador, montador, director de casting, ayudante de direccion y todo lo que fuera necesario hasta que, despues de algun nuevo parentesis, se consolida como guionista, lo que facilita su paso a la direccion, que tuvo lugar en 1926 con la produccion Fox The Road to Glory. De las ocho peliculas mudas que realizo, la mas “hawksiana” es, sin duda, Una novia en cada puerto (A Girl in Every Port, 1928), pero el director es, sin discusion, un hombre del sonoro, acaso por la esplendida utilizacion de los dialogos que lo caracterizo, y que se pone de manifiesto de forma extrema en La fiera de mi nina (Bringing Up Baby, 1938), una de las cumbres de la comedia. Todo aquello que toco Hawks, lo dignifico: la comedia, como se ha puesto de manifiesto, pero tambien el cine negro, con El sueno eterno (The Big Sleep, 1946), el filme de aventuras, con Hatari! (1962) y, desde luego, el western, genero en el que cada una de sus incursiones originaba una obra maestra. Rio Bravo es, sin ningun genero de dudas, una de las dos o tres mejores peliculas de un genero tan inagotable como la vida. Al parecer, el origen de la pelicula hay que encontrarlo en la irritacion que le producia a Hawks Solo ante el peligro (High Noon, Fred Zinnemann, 1952), cuyo metraje discurre en la tarea de encontrar ayuda para que el sheriff del lugar pueda enfrentarse a unos pistoleros que se encuentran camino de la ciudad. La idea motriz de Hawks, permanente a lo largo de toda su filmografia, de mostrar a personas (preferentemente hombres porque las mujeres son, sobre todo, causa de conflictos) que estan realizando su trabajo y lo realizan lo mejor que saben, es la historia de todos y cada uno de sus westerns, particularmente de su falsa coleccion de “rios”, formada por dos peliculas en lugar de cuatro, porque Rio Rojo es, en realidad, Red River, y en Rio de sangre ni siquiera aparece la palabra en el titulo original. Solo Rio Bravo y Rio Lobo, peliculas fronterizas donde las haya, responden a la idea que acuno el termino unificador para las cuatro peliculas. Estas dos ultimas, y la estupenda El Dorado, remake mas o menos encubierto de Rio Bravo, si que permanecen unidas por estrechos lazos cronologicos, estilisticos y tematicos.Viva Villa! (.Viva Villa!) 3 Nyby, Christian
1913-1993Nacido en Los Angeles, estuvo a sueldo de Warner Bros como montador durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. En ese periodo trabaja en algunas peliculas importantes, particularmente Tener y no tener (To Have and Have Not, 1944), donde hace amistad con su director, Howard Hawks, a cuyo equipo tecnico se incorpora. En tal condicion, participa en otra pelicula de Hawks, Rio Rojo (Red River, 1949), origen del conflicto que surgio entre Hawks, Nyby y Howard Hughes. Este acuso a Hawks de plagio, al pretender que Red River debia mas de lo razonable a The Outlaw, la pelicula que habia frimado Hughes en 1943. Hawks y Nyby estaban trabajando entonces en La cosa (The Thing from Another World, 1951), que iba a ser el debut del segundo como director. De resultas del conflicto, Hawks se vio obligado a desaparecer de la pelicula, que fue remontada y estrenada, aunque, afortunadamente, mas tarde se recupero el montaje original. Siempre se especulara con la aportacion real de Nyby a esa obra maestra del genero fantastico, que segun muchos dirigio el siempre magnifico Howard Hawks. Es cierto que Nyby no volvio a firmar nada con algun interes, si bien es igualmente cierto que este antiguo montador desarrollo su tarea como director, en la que tuvo tan lucido debut, principalmente en television. Thomas Carr fue uno mas entre tantos directores de series (incluidas unas Adventures of Superman televisivas en 1952), sobre todo para Republic. 1900-1979Sus origenes en el cine se situan dentro de la tarea de operador de camara y, despues, ayudante de direccion. Su carrera como director comienza realmente en 1936. Lesley Selander es uno de los grandes especialistas del western, con mas de cien peliculas a sus espaldas. Decir “uno de los grandes especialistas” no es lo mismo que decir “uno de los grandes nombres” y, en efecto, la trayectoria de Selander, en lo que a la calidad de sus peliculas se refiere, es irregular. Lo que, sin embargo, sorprende es que la valoracion media de sus westerns no es baja, lo que indica que el director poseia un especial instinto para el genero, que pone de manifiesto con una plastica mas que correcta y un buen manejo del tiempo de la narracion. 1894-1975El nombre de Joseph Kane se asocia de forma indisoluble a una productora, Republic, de principio a fin. Kane habia dirigido en 1935 un serial para Mascot, que junto con otras pequenas productoras se asociaron para fundar Republic ese mismo ano. Desde esa fecha hasta 1958, en que la productora desaparece, Kane es uno de sus directores mas prolificos. Estamos ante uno de los grandes nombres del western, en cantidad, ya que no en calidad. Entre 1934 y 1975 trabaja en no menos de 120 peliculas, la inmensa mayoria de las cuales pertenecen al genero que nos ocupa. Trabaja con Gene Autry, John Wayne, Robert Livingston, Roy Rogers, Bill Elliott, en tre otros. Despues dirigira algunos episodios de se ries de television y otras cuatro peliculas.
