In inglese, quando avviene qualcosa mentre si sta parlando, bisogna necessariamente utilizzare il presente progressivo: It's raining, piove (non It rains); It's snowing, nevica. Il presente semplice viene usato quando si tratta di un'azione abituale o di una generalizzazione: In England it rains more than in Italy, in Inghilterra piove più che in Italia.

I verbi frasali to go in e to come in possono essere entrambi tradotti con “entrare”, ma vengono usati in situazioni diverse. To come in viene usato quando ci si rivolge a qualcuno che si trova nel luogo in cui si vuole entrare oppure quando la persona all'interno si rivolge a qualcuno che si trova all'esterno: May I come in?, posso entrare?; Please, come in!, prego, entrate! To go in (o into, se si specifica dove si entra), invece, viene usato quando non c'è nessuno nel luogo in cui si entra, oppure quando non c'è nessun contatto tra chi si trova dentro e chi si trova fuori dal luogo in cui si sta entrando: It started raining, so I decided to go into the cinema, cominciò a piovere, così decisi di entrare nel cinema; Why don't you go in?, perché non entri? (entrambe le persone si trovano all'esterno).

Il verbo della proposizione retta da to wish (def. 4) è al congiuntivo passato oppure è preceduto da would.

1 Il congiuntivo passato è usato per esprimere un desiderio la cui realizzazione non dipende dalla volontà del soggetto della subordinata: I wish I had more time to read (o I wish I could have more time to read), vorrei avere più tempo per leggere, magari avessi più tempo per leggere!; I wish you didn't suffer so much, vorrei che non soffrissi così; I wish I were (o was) rich, come vorrei essere ricco!

È possibile anche usare il past perfect: I wish I hadn't drunk so much, se solo avessi bevuto di meno!

2 would è usato per esprimere il desiderio che il soggetto della subordinata compia l'azione specificata: I wish he would be quiet, come vorrei che stesse zitto!, magari stesse zitto!, se stesse un po' zitto!; I wish you would trust me, vorrei che ti fidassi di me, se solo ti fidassi di me!

would può anche essere usato parlando del tempo o di macchine, ecc., come se avessero una propria volontà: I wish it would stop raining, come vorrei che smettesse di piovere, se solo smettesse di piovere! (ma, dato che si riferisce a uno stato di cose e non a un'azione, si dice I wish it weren't so cold today, vorrei che non facesse così freddo oggi).

La costruzione I wish I would non è possibile ( I wish I would work less), come pure la costruzione wish + would have + participio passato ( I wish I wouldn't have drunk so much).
