They served as the focus of religious rites, and those of the Maya may also have functioned as astronomical observatories. The discovery in 1952 of a sarcophagus at the heart of the Mayan Pyramid of Inscriptions (built around 680 AD) at Palenque indicated that one at least was used as a tomb. The great pyramids of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlán (built in successive layers over the preceding two centuries) amazed the Conquistadors on their arrival in 1519, though this did not stop the Spanish from demolishing them and using the stone to build Mexico City's cathedral. Today the pyramids, whether ruined or restored, are among the most visited tourist sites in the Americas.* * *f pyramid* * *pirámide nf: pyramid* * *pirámide n pyramid -

Made almost exclusively by women, these textiles include “molas” (embroidery from Guatemala and Panama), “huipiles” (shawls from southern Mexico and Guatemala) and “aguayos” (alpaca wool shawls from Bolivia and Peru). “Molas” are cloth panels made of brightly coloured pieces of fabric sewn together to depict animals or a landscape. They can then be used to decorate colourful traditional blouses. “Huipiles” and “aguayos” are woven on looms with a narrow geometrical border and sometimes show ritual animals and objects, or even entire stories. In pre-Columbian times such textiles were worn as ceremonial costumes, given as gifts, offered up to the gods and buried with the dead. Today they are used in everyday accessories, such as blankets, trimmings, handbags and shoes, and “huipiles” and “aguayos” are used for carrying loads (and babies).* * *I adj textile atrII mpl:textiles textiles* * *textil adj & nm: textile* * *textil adj textile -

The project was first proposed in 1925 and construction began three years later, but the road has yet to cross the densely forested Darien Gap in Panama. For all its merits as a prestige project, and its concrete benefits as a means of communication, further construction is dogged by controversy over the real threat to the ecosystem of the rainforest and to the culture of the indigenous peoples who live in the Darien region. -

use of the vos form instead of tú
* * *voseo nm= practice of using the “vos” pronoun instead of “tú”VOSEOVoseo means the use of the “vos” form instead of “tú” in the second person singular. This is the norm in the River Plate region, where it is always used with a special form of the verb in the present tense (e.g. “vos tenés” instead of “tú tienes”). It is also found in other areas of Latin America. In Chile and areas of Bolivia, Peru and Venezuela, “tú” is also used, indicating slightly less informality. The forms “vos” and “tú” are used alternately in Central America, ranging from mostly “vos” in Costa Rica to mostly “tú” in Panama. In these areas, “vos” may be used with the normal second person singular verb form (e.g. “vos tienes”). -
