* * *Spain has long been been a diverse country, made up of different kingdoms and territories with their own languages, political institutions and legal systems. Periods of central control and uniformity, such as the Franco era, nurtured nationalist and separatist feeling in the Basque Country, Catalonia and Galicia. The 1978 Constitution changed Spain into a country consisting of 19 autonomous regions, known as comunidades autónomas or autonomías. These replaced the old regiones (↑ región a1). Each of them has its own parliament and government, and its relationship with the central government is governed by an estatuto. Some have more autonomy than others. The comunidades autónomas are: Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, the Balearic Islands, the Basque Country, the Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Murcia, Navarre, La Rioja, Valencia and the North African cities of Ceuta and Melilla. The festivities are centred round gigantic papier-mâché sculptures (the fallas) which are erected in public squares all over the city. They are constructed over the preceding eleven months by different local groups and normally depict caricatures of politicians and other celebrities of the year. Valencia is renowned for its fireworks, and they are much in evidence during the festival, especially during the famous “mascletá”, in which thousands of fire crackers are exploded with deafening effect. At the end of the final week of festivities prizes are awarded to the best or most original fallas and the figures are then burnt. A small figure (or “ninot”) is preserved from the winning falla, and kept in a special museum.* * *f1 GEOL fault;la falla de San Andrés the San Andreas Fault2 de fabricación flaw3:* * *falla nf1) : flaw, defect2) : (geological) fault3) : fault, failing* * *falla n (en geología) fault -

19 Neural Network
1. A neural network is composed of a number of very simple processing elements [("neurodes")] that communicate through a rich set of interconnections with variable weights or strengths.2. Memories are stored or represented in a neural network in the pattern of variable interconnection weights among the neurodes. Information is processed by a spreading, constantly changing pattern of activity distributed across many neurodes.3. A neural network is taught or trained rather than programmed. It is even possible to construct systems capable of independent or autonomous learning....4. Instead of having a separate memory and controller, plus a stored external program that dictates the operation of the system as in a digital computer, the operation of a neural network is implicitly controlled by three properties: the transfer function of the neurodes, the details of the structure of the connections among the neurodes, and the learning law the system follows.5. A neural network naturally acts as an associative memory. That is, it inherently associated items it is taught, physically grouping similar items together in its structure. A neural network operated as a memory is content addressable; it can retrieve stored information from incomplete, noisy, or partially incorrect input cues.6. A neural network is able to generalize; it can learn the characteristics of a general category of objects based on a series of specific examples from that category.7. A neural network keeps working even after a significant fraction of its neurodes and interconnections have become defective.8. A neural network innately acts as a processor for time-dependent spatial patterns, or spatiotemporal patterns.
