36 anquera
(Sp. model spelled same [arjkera] < Italian or Old Provencal anca 'croup or hindquarters' plus Spanish suffix -era, 'place where something is used'; hence, 'an item that is used on the horse's hindquarters')Mexico and California: 1881. A wide, often highly decorated piece of leather at the base of a western saddle lacking a rear jockey. Watts indicates that the anquera was used when another rider was placed to the rear of the first. Its practical function was to safeguard the second rider from contact with a sweaty horse. Other sources (including Blevins and Rossi, as cited in Watts) claim that the anquera had principally a decorative function. This term is not found in the DRAE, but the DM defines it as a type of leather cover attached to the cantle behind the saddle. Decorated with a string of small iron bells, it covers the horse's hindquarters and extends to the hocks. It is used in the breaking of a horse and as protection during bullfights or when the animal is thrown on the ground. According to Santamaría, the term is rarely used in Spanish today. The anquera is considered a characteristic feature of nineteenth-century Mexican saddles. -
37 cordillera
(Sp. model spelled same [korðijéra] < Spanish cuerda 'visible summit of a mountain' < Latin chorda 'string of a musical instrument' or 'rope, cord' plus the diminutive - illo and derivative suffix - era 'place where the summits abound')Clark: 1880s. A mountain range; especially the Rocky Mountains of the western United States and Canada. Clark notes that there is an adjective form, cordilleran, and Hendrickson indicates that the term is frequently seen in the plural, cordilleras. The DRAE glosses it as a series of mountains that are connected to one another. See also sierra. -
38 reata
(Sp. model spelled same [reáta] < reatar 'to retie' < atar 'to tie' < Latin aptare 'to adapt; to subject')Bentley: 1838. A rope, made of braided rawhide or leather, according to Blevins (who cites Mora). Watts notes it occasionally referred to a grass rope. Some sources list it as a synonym for lariat, but Clark indicates that the reata is much shorter than the lariat and is used for many purposes, but not for catching cattle. However, neither Watts nor Blevins agrees with Clark. They observe that reatas are made from four to eight strands of leather or rawhide (four being the most suitable for everyday work) and generally measure forty to sixty feet in length, with a diameter three-eighths inch being the most common. These are and were used for roping cattle and other chores. Referenced in the DRAE as a cord, strap, or rope used for tying, or a rope used especially for tying horses or mules in single file. Santamaría glosses it as a rope in general, but especially a rope of twisted fiber, used by charros in their profession.Alternate forms: riata, rieta, rietta. Also called a string. -
39 remuda
Clark: 1840s. A herd of domesticated horses on a ranch or trail drive under the charge of a remudero or wrangler. At the beginning of each shift, cowboys would choose their mount from this herd. Horses in this type of herd are said to be in remuda. Watts indicates that since the turn of the century this term has been used on occasion to allude to a cowboy's personal string or even a single horse. Spanish sources provide similar definitions, but none exactly like the southwestern meaning. The DRAE glosses remuda as a change, such as a change of clothing. Santamaría defines it as a relay or draft horse, or a horse or mule that relieves another animal that has become tired from working.Alternate form: remouda. -
