Appelé aussi téléphone mobile ou téléphone cellulaire, un téléphone portable est un téléphone utilisant les ondes radio (transmission radio-électrique par voie hertzienne) pour l’acheminement de la voix et autres données: SMS (short message service), courriel, internet, MMS (multimedia messaging service). La principale norme de transmission est la norme GSM (global system for mobile telecommunications), utilisée depuis 1992. Apparu en 2001, le smartphone est un téléphone portable doublé d’un PDA (personal digital assistant), complété fin 2002 par un écran couleur, un son polyphonique et une fonction appareil photo. Les téléphones portables de 3e génération (3G) apparaissent courant 2004, avec une vitesse accrue pour la transmission des données, ce qui permet la visiophonie, le téléchargement de musique et de vidéos, et l’utilisation des blogs et les chats. En février 2004, 1,3 milliard de personnes possèdent un téléphone portable. Les pays venant en tête sont la Chine, les Etats-Unis, l’Inde et l’Indonésie. 620 millions de téléphones portables sont vendus dans le monde en 2004, 780 millions en 2005 et un milliard en 2006. GPRS (general packet radio service) signifie littéralement "service général de radiocommunication en mode paquet". Destiné aux téléphones portables, le GPRS est un standard de transmission radio-électrique permettant d’acheminer les données numériques (voix, texte et multimédia) en utilisant la commutation de paquets dans un réseau de téléphonie de type GSM (global system for mobile communications), avec un débit théorique de 115 Kbps (kilobits par seconde) et un débit réel de 50 Kbps. Il est progressivement remplacé par le standard EDGE (enhanced data for GSM evolution), au débit plus rapide, puis par le standard 3GSM (3G + GSM), un standard de téléphonie 3G (3e génération). -

Общеевропейский протокол пейджинговой связи, одобренный ETSI в 1992 г. В системе ERMES в диапазоне частот 169,4-169,8 МГц организуются 16 частотных каналов с разносом в 25 кГц. Скорость передачи данных - 6,25 кбит/с. Пейджинговые системы на базе протокола ERMES, обеспечивают передачу цифровых (до 1600 знаков) или текстовых (до 9000 символов) сообщений. Согласно протоколу ERMES передача информации осуществляется суперкадрами с периодом 60 мин. Суперкадр состоит из 60 минутных кадров, каждый из которых включает пять 12-секундных последовательностей (16 пакетов длиной 0,75 с). Пакеты обозначаются буквами латинского алфавита от А до Р и передаются на разных частотах.
