•• Типичный «ложный друг», который может оказаться довольно коварным. Дело в том, что первое значение русского слова рудиментарный – остаточный, а английского rudimentary, наоборот, минимальный, неразвитый. Имея одинаковое терминологическое значение в сфере анатомии (и оттуда проникнув в обиходную речь), это слово в разных языках пошло расходящимися путями. Если англичанин говорит My French is rudimentary, он имеет в виду, что только начал его изучать или остановился на очень примитивном уровне. Если он хочет сказать, что «подзабыл» язык, то скажет не rudimentary, а rusty.

Rudimentary можно также использовать и при переводе русского ненавязчивый сервис (еще можно сказать Service was conspicuous by its absence).
