Благодаря этой же силе в описании авантюрного и жизнерадостного характера главного героя звучит нотка отчаяния, глубоко волнующая зрителя. Мимоходом Видор говорит также о насилии, эротизме (часто лишенного у его персонажей своей непосредственной функции), о силе и тоске этих динозавров с молодым сердцем в мире, который уже начинает стареть. Фильм многим обязан личности Кёрка Дагласа: он в этом фильме не просто актер, а, как это часто с ним происходит, творец собственного персонажа. Несколько лет спустя Кёрк Даглас станет продюсером и исполнит главную роль в своеобразном продолжении фильма, чье действие происходит уже в наши дни: Смельчаки одиноки, Lonely Are the Brave.N.B.
