22 Brush, Charles Francis
[br]b. 17 March 1849 Euclid, Michigan, USAd. 15 June 1929 Cleveland, Ohio, USA[br]American engineer, inventor of a multiple electric arc lighting system and founder of the Brush Electric Company.[br]Brush graduated from the University of Michigan in 1869 and worked for several years as a chemist. Believing that electric arc lighting would be commercially successful if the equipment could be improved, he completed his first dynamo in 1875 and a simplified arc lamp. His original system operated a maximum of four lights, each on a separate circuit, from one dynamo. Brush envisaged a wider market for his product and by 1879 had available on arc lighting system principally intended for street and other outdoor illumination. He designed a dynamo that generated a high voltage and which, with a carbon-pile regulator, provided an almost constant current permitting the use of up to forty lamps on one circuit. He also improved arc lamps by incorporating a slipping-clutch regulating mechanism and automatic means of bringing into use a second set of carbons, thereby doubling the period between replacements.Brush's multiple electric arc lighting system was first demonstrated in Cleveland and by 1880 had been adopted in a number of American cities, including New York, Boston and Philadelphia. It was also employed in many European towns until incandescent lamps, for which the Brush dynamo was unsuitable, came into use. To market his apparatus, Brush promoted local lighting companies and thereby secured local capital.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsChevalier de la Légion d'honneur 1881. 23 Sinclair, Sir Clive Maries
[br]b. 30 July 1940[br]English electronic engineer and inventor.[br]The son of G.W.C.Sinclair, a machine tool engineer, the young Sinclair's education was disrupted by the failure of his father's business. Aged 12 he left Boxgrove preparatory school and went through twelve more schools before leaving St George's School, Weybridge, at the age of 17. His first job was as an editorial assistant on a hobbyist's magazine, Practical Wireless, and his next as an editor at Bernard Books, writing a series of technical manuals. In 1961 he registered Sinclair Radionics and in the following year announced its first product, a micro-amplifier. This was the first of a series of miniaturized radio products that he put on the market while retaining his editorial job. In 1972 he launched the Sinclair Executive calculator, selling originally at £79.95 but later at £24.95. In 1976, the Black Watch, an electronic watch with digital light-emitting diode (LED) display, was marketed, to be followed by the TV1A, a miniature television with a 2 in. (5 cm) monochrome screen. During the latter part of this period, Sinclair Radionics was supported by investment from the UK National Enterprise Board, who appointed an outside managing director; after making a considerable loss, they closed the company in 1979. However, Sinclair Electronics had already been set up and started to market the UK's first cheap computer kit, the MK 14, which was followed by the ZX 80 and later the ZX 81. Price was kept at a minimum by the extensive use of existing components, though this was a restriction on performance. The small memory was enhanced from one kilobyte to seventeen kilobytes with the addition of a separate memory unit. In January 1985 Sinclair produced the Sinclair C5, a small three-wheeled vehicle driven by a washing-machine engine, intended as a revolutionary new form of personal transport; perceived as unsafe and impractical, it did not prove popular, and the failure of this venture resulted in a contraction of Sinclair's business activities. Later in 1985, a rival electronics company, Amstrad, paid £35,000,000 for all rights to existing Sinclair computer products. In March 1992, the irrepressible Sinclair launched his latest brainchild, the Zike electric bicycle; a price of £499 was forecast. This machine, powered by an electric motor but with pedal assistance, had a top speed of 19 km/h (12 mph) and, on full power, would run for up to one hour. Its lightweight nickel-cadmium battery could be recharged either by a generator or by free-wheeling. Although more practical than the C5, it did not bring Sinclair success on the scale of his earlier micro-electronic products.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsKnighted 1983.Further ReadingI.Adamson and R.Kennedy, 1986, Sinclair and the "Sunrise" Technology, Harmondsworth: Penguin.IMcNBiographical history of technology > Sinclair, Sir Clive Maries

31 Chudders
Shawls varying in size, quality and style, according to the market for which intended, with borders, fringe and headings. Constructed of cotton in many widths up to 48-in. X 48-in. Used as a covering by Mohammedan women. The term is also applied to the plain weave dyed woollen shawls made at Rampore and Amritsar, India. Also termed Choddur and at times Chadur. -
32 Farmers' Satin
A good quality satin fabric, woven from cotton warp and wool weft. Used as a lining material and finished with a lustre. The satin weaves on 5, 7, 9 and 11 ends are variously used. The 9-shaft satin weave is most used. Introduced about 1842 in the American market in black and other dark colours it soon received great favour and lighter colours were supplied. Although intended for linings only, the cloth was soon taken up for women's dresses. Made in 27-in. and 32-in. (Also known as Italian satin) -
33 Gelsoline
An Italian fabric of 1888 intended to resemble silk. The yarns were spun from mulberry tree fibre. Two Italian inventors produced an apparatus which mechanically separated fibre from the bark of the young shoots of the mulberry tree. The fibres were treated by secret processes, spun into yarn, woven into cloth and offered in the London market. Although samples of fabric were shown, there does not appear to have been much trade done. -
34 anti-dumping
Econintended to prevent the sale of goods on a foreign market at a price below their marginal cost -
35 Bunning, James Bunstone
SUBJECT AREA: Architecture and building[br]b. 1802 London, Englandd. 1863 London (?), England[br]English surveyor responsible for some impressive structures in London.[br]For the last twenty years of his life Bunning served as architect to the Corporation of London. During this time he was especially noted for three large buildings: Holloway Prison (1849–52), built in stone in a bold, castellated style; Caledonian Market (1855); and, most important and original, the Coal Exchange (1847–9).Bunning's larger replacement for an earlier building in Lower Thames Street was a ferrovitreous triumph. The exterior was of fashionable Italianate design, but inside it contained an elegant 60 ft (18 m) diameter rotunda of cast iron intended for the meeting of merchants. Galleries made entirely of iron and supported on brackets encircled the walls at three levels, and above was a glazed dome of ground plate glass rising to over 74 ft (22.5 m) from ground level, supported by thirty-two iron ribs. For decoration there were twenty-four painted panels depicting plants and fossils found in coal seams, and eight smaller compartments showing coal implements. The demolition of this outstanding structure in 1962 so that the road could be widened, served as a trigger to public concern over the then-increasing rate of demolition of notable nineteenth-century structures. During excavation for this building, a structure which cost £40,000, a Roman hypocaust system was found beneath and preserved.[br]Further ReadingG.Godwin, 1850, "Buildings and Monuments: Modern and Medieval", The Builder.DYBiographical history of technology > Bunning, James Bunstone

arc-resistant switchgear
A type of switchgear design which is designed to withstand the effects of an internal arcing fault, without causing harm to personnel who are located in defined areas. It is not intended to withstand these internal arcing fault without possibly causing physical damage to the structure and/or components, but often the physical damage is less with an arc-resistant design.
There are three classes of protection:
Type A - eliminates the emission of gases and particles from the front of the switchgear during an internal arcing fault,
Type B - eliminates the emission of gases and particles from the front and sides of the switchgear during an internal arcing fault,
Type C - eliminates the emission of gases and particles from the front and sides of the switchgear, from between compartments within the same cell, and between adjacent cells during an internal arcing fault.
Arc-resistant switchgear has traditionally been metal-clad, but the basic concept could also be applied to other types of switchgear as well.
arc-proof switchgear

If the electric arc occurs inside LV switchgear it generates internal overpressures and results in local overheatings which may cause high mechanical and thermal stresses in the equipment.
Besides, the involved materials can generate hot decomposition products, gases or fumes, which, due to the overpressure, are almost always ejected to the outside of the enclosure thus jeopardizing the operator safety.
The European Directive 2006/95/EC states the fundamental safety requirements for low voltage electric materials (from 50 V to 1000 V in alternating current, from 75 V to 1500 V in continuos current) to be put on the market within the European Community.
Among the essential safety requirements defined by this Directive particular importance is given to the need of taking technical measures to prevent “temperature rises, electric arcs or radiations which may result in hazards” from occurring.
This aspect has always been highly considered for apparatus, but it has been wrongly neglected for electrical switchgear and only in the last 10-15 years it has been catching on both at Italian as well as at international level.
Safety for the operator and for the installation in case of arcing inside LV switchgear can be obtained through three different design philosophies:
1. assemblies mechanically capable of withstanding the electric arc (passive protection)
2. assemblies equipped with devices limiting the effects of internal arcing (active protection)
3. assemblies equipped with current limiting circuitbreakers.
These three solutions (also combined together) have found a remakable development in the industrial field and have been successfully applied by the main manufacturers of LV switchgear and controlgear assemblies.
As it can be seen hereafter by examining the first two solutions, an “active” protection against arc faults is intrinsecally more complex than a “passive” one.
This because of the presence of additional electromechanical/ electronic devices5 which limit the arcing effects and which, by their nature, may be subject to faults or not-tripping.

arc-resistant switchgear
An incorrect term. Please refer to arc-resistant switchgear
