4 a nine days' wonder
пословицы a wonder lasts but nine days, and then the puppy's eyes are open]; см. тж. a wonder lasts but nine daysEdward: "You'd think it strange if I should marry her..." Gloucester: "That would be ten days wonder at the least." Clarence: "That's a day longer than a wonder lasts. " (W. Shakespeare, ‘Henry VI’, part III, act III, sc. 2) — Король Эдуард: "Вас поразит, что я ее сосватал..." Кларенс: "Кому, король?" Король Эдуард: "Да самому себе." Глостер: "То было бы десятидневным чудом." Кларенс: "Днем больше, чем пристало длиться чуду." (перевод Е. Бируковой)
The two combatants were instantly separated; sides were taken by the friends of each... It was a nine days' wonder in the club... (Th. Dreiser, ‘The Financier’, ch.
The murder of the Captain was a nine days' wonder. Nobody could suggest a motive for it. (A. Christie, ‘The Partners in Crime’, ch.

Here was this boy of his, who had been playing with clockwork trains on the floor only the day before yesterday, so to speak, and now he could talk in this strain, as cool as you please... (J. B. Priestley, ‘Angel Pavement’, ch.
And the story was a good little story; it had all the right elements in it, the good-looking boy, the mysterious beautiful woman, the wild nights at the flat, the last fatal scene, the subsequent revelations and the moral of it all; it was as neat as you please. (J. B. Priestley, ‘Wonder Hero’, ch.

Indicative/Subjunctive after "si"
Si can be followed by both the {indicative} and the {subjunctive}. The {indicative} describes facts and likely situations; the {subjunctive} describes remote or hypothetical situations.
Indicative ► Use si + ((present indicative)) to translate if + ((present)) in English:
If you go on overeating, you'll get fat Si sigues comiendo tanto, vas a engordar
Don't do it if you don't want to No lo hagas si no quieres NOTE: Don't use si with the ((present subjunctive)).
Subjunctive ► Use si + ((imperfect subjunctive)) to translate if + ((past)) for remote or uncertain possibilities and hypotheses:
If we won the lottery, we would never have to work again Si nos tocase or tocara la lotería, no tendríamos que trabajar nunca más
What would you do if I weren't here? ¿Qué harías si yo no estuviese or estuviera aquí? ► Use si + ((pluperfect subjunctive)) (= hubiera or hubiese + ((past participle))) to translate if + had + ((past participle)):
If Paula hadn't lost her ticket, she would have left today Si Paula no hubiera or hubiese perdido el billete, habría salido hoy Alternatively, instead of a clause with si, you can often use de ( no) haber + ((past participle)):
If Paula hadn't lost her ticket, she would have left today De no haber perdido Paula el billete, habría salido hoy For further uses and examples, see main entry* * *

man is king as the days grow longer, the storms are stronger at a round table, there is no dispute of place a bad excuse is better than none a bad vessel is seldom broken be just before you're generous be just to all, but trust not all the best things come in small packages the best way to resist temptation is to give in to it better alone than in bad company better an empty house than a bad tenant better be the head of a dog than the tail of a lion better ride an ass that carries me than a horse that throws me better to beg than to steal, but better to work than to beg better a tooth out than always aching between two stools one goes to the ground a bird may be known by its flight a bird never flew on one wing a bit in the morning is better than nothing all day a bleating sheep loses a bite a blind man would be glad to see a blind man needs no looking glass bread always falls buttered side down a burden which one chooses is not felt butter to butter is no relish cast no dirt grows nor thrives two can play at that game two dogs over one bone seldom agree venture a small fish to catch a great one the voice with a smile always wins wear my shoes and you'll know where they pitch we weep when we are born, not when we die what can you have of a cat but her skin what can't be cured must be endured what matters to a blind man that his father could see what you lose on the swings, you gain on the roundabouts when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail when a dog is drowning, everyone offers him drink when in doubt, do nowt when interest is lost, memory is lost when a man lays the foundation of his own ruin, others will build on it when a river does not make a noise, it is either empty or very full when the devil is dead, he never lacks a chief mourner when two ride on one horse one must sit behind where bees are, there is honey where it is weakest, there the thread breaks who seeks what he should not finds what he would not why keep a dog and bark yourself? a wonder lasts but nine days the worth of a thing is best known by its want the world is a ladder for some to go up and some down would you persuade, speak of interest, not of reason you buy land, you buy stones; you buy meat, you buy bones you can take a horse to the water, but you cannot make him drink you can tell the day by the morning you cannot lose what you never had you cannot touch pitch and not be defiled you can't put new wine in old bottles you can't walk and look at the stars if you have a stone in your shoe your looking glass will tell you what none of your friends will zeal without knowledge is a runaway horse -
