Конфликт 1857-58 между федеральным правительством и мормонами [ Mormons] в Территории Юта [Utah Territory]. С момента ее образования в 1850 до федеральных властей доходили жалобы на господство мормонов и насаждение ими своих обычаев, прежде всего многоженства. Эти настроения подогревались ложными донесениями о бунте, которые местные представители федеральных властей передавали в Вашингтон. В 1857 президент США Дж. Бьюкенен [ Buchanan, James] назначил А. Камминга [Cumming, Alfred], не являвшегося мормоном, новым губернатором Территории взамен мормона Б. Янга [ Young, Brigham]. Мормоны выступили против этого назначения. В мае 1857 президент отправил войска численностью 2,5 тыс. человек для восстановления порядка и поддержки Камминга. В сентябре 1857 мормоны приняли участие в нападении индейцев на поселенцев-немормонов [Gentiles], вошедшем в историю как бойня у Маунтин-Медоуз [Mountain Meadows Massacre]; в результате были убиты 120 немормонов. Боясь мести, мормоны уничтожили армейские арсеналы, тем самым предотвратив приход армии до лета 1858. К этому времени был достигнут компромисс. В июне 1858 войска вошли в г. Солт-Лейк-Сити, а Камминг занял пост губернатора. Следствием конфликта стало длительное недоверие между федеральными властями и местным мормонским населением, препятствовавшее приему Юты в состав США в качестве штата вплоть до 1896 -
