Тут рассказчик Саша Гитри прерывает повествование, чтобы представить своих партнеров и объявить, что 3 главные роли - Дезире, Жюли и Наполеон - сменят своих исполнителей. Роль Императора достается самому рассказчику.Воздавая добром за зло, поскольку Дезире всего лишь ненавидит его, а Бернадот не ограничивается этим и плетет против него заговоры, Наполеон осыпает супругов дарами и титулами. Пока Император одерживает победу за победой, злоба Дезире все прочнеет. Она признается сестре, что, по ее мнению, Бернадот неосознанно завидует Императору. В конце концов он впадает в немилость. Тут шведы, оценив благодушие, проявленное Бернадотом при оккупации их страны, предлагают ему место самого важного человека в королевстве. Он соглашается, но при условии, что старый король Карл XIII, не имеющий наследников, усыновит его. После смерти короля Бернадот, приняв шведское гражданство и протестантскую веру, восходит на трон.В Париже Дезире, не осознавая этого, участвует в заговорах против Императора. Швеция присоединяется к другим европейским странам, вошедшим в коалицию против него. Когда Наполеона отправляют на остров Св. Елены. Дезире тайно добивается возвращения праха покойного Императора.► 2-я историческая фреска Гитри после Пройдемся по Елисейским полям, Remontons les Champs-Élysées, поскольку Жемчужины короны, Les Pèrles de la couronne - скорее фантазия, а не историческая картина. Случай и предопределение - весь фильм основан на этих темах, всегда увлекавших Гитри. События, опровергающие или подтверждающие предопределение, присутствуют в фильме в огромном количестве. Все они искусно собраны ( или выдуманы) Гитри. Он позаботился, чтобы события эти формировали в равном соотношении необычные эпизоды и изобретательные или симпатичные гэги. Чтобы расположить их в осмысленном порядке, который ни в коем случае не может совпадать с обычной хронологией, Гитри необходимо путешествовать во времени, даже если это воображаемое время (4-е, юмористическое измерение, очень в его духе), откуда он высекает, к примеру, крохотные утопические сценки - напр., ту, где судебный чиновник составляет акт о рождении Мольера и испускает восторженное «ах!». Гитри вновь использует прием, впервые опробованный в Романе шулера, Le Roman d'un tricheur - вводит в действие рассказчика-демиурга, вторгается в повествование по любому поводу и таким образом лучше прочих во французском кино использует специфические возможности звукового кинематографа.В этой картине оригинальность предопределения заключается в том, что выбранный человек (Дезире Клари) лишен особой оригинальности. Как будто предопределение, которое обычно касается гения (еще одна излюбленная тема Гитри), расширяется до границ близкого окружения гения. Кроме того, этот фильм - история влюбленной пары и их странных, страстных отношений, изменчивых, но несущих разочарование обоим. Эти отношения продолжат изменяться даже после смерти одного влюбленного. Стоит отметить, что в кои-то веки они описаны автором без всякого цинизма, кроме того из 2 влюбленных наиболее «виновен» мужчина. Он пытается искупить свою вину при жизни; она же пытается это сделать после его смерти. Помимо неявных автобиографических мотивов, всегда присутствующих у Гитри в описании отношений между влюбленными, помимо злободневных аллюзий (судьба 2 французов на шведском троне представляет собой необычную метафору оккупации), автор пускает вскачь свое причудливое воображение, а также страсть к спекуляциям, которая никогда не покидала его.
