Une webcam est une caméra web, à savoir une caméra branchée à un ordinateur pour transmission directe sur le web. La première webcam est mise en place en 1991 par deux ingénieurs du laboratoire informatique de l’Université de Cambridge (Royaume-Uni) pour surveiller la cafetière électrique du service (devenue célèbre sous le nom de Trojan Room coffee pot), afin d’éviter d’avoir à descendre et remonter plusieurs étages pour trouver la cafetière vide. Cette webcam fonctionne jusqu’en août 2001. Au début des années 2000, la webcam devient partie intégrante d’un équipement informatique. Nombreux sont les sites web qui proposent une caméra vidéo reliée en permanence au réseau, que ce soit pour voir Montréal sous différents angles ou pour jeter un coup d’oeil sur la salle de rédaction du quotidien Le Monde (cette webcam fut temporaire). -
