Esempi in frase interrogativa indiretta sono chiedi a tua moglie se è già pronta = ask your wife if she is ready yet, e mi domando se sono già arrivati = I wonder if they are there yet. I already spoke to him; hai già mangiato? = did you eat yet? (ma l'uso britannico standard prevede ancora "I've already spoken to him" e "have you eaten yet?")* * *già/dʒa/Ci sono tre modi principali per tradurre già in inglese: already, yet e before. = 10 o'clock already, we're late!; è inutile continuare, ha già vinto lui = there's no point in going on, he has already won; ne conoscevo già il significato = I already knew its meaning. 17 -enough-
Nota d'uso1 Come aggettivo, enough in genere precede il nome: Is there enough bread?, c'è abbastanza pane?; I'm afraid we haven't got enough rooms to accommodate you, purtroppo non abbiamo abbastanza stanze per ospitarvi. La combinazione inversa, nome + enough, è ormai antiquata, ma ancora abbastanza frequente con alcuni nomi, ad esempio time: I don't have time enough (o enough time) to go to the gym, non ho abbastanza tempo per andare in palestra.2 Come avverbio, enough segue sempre l'aggettivo, l'avverbio o il verbo che modifica: He isn't clever enough for that job, non è abbastanza sveglio per quel lavoro; You're old enough to earn your living, sei grande abbastanza per mantenerti; Mary is a good enough teacher, Mary è un'insegnante valida (o all'altezza); He fought bravely enough, ha combattuto con il coraggio necessario; You haven't studied enough, non hai studiato abbastanza.
Inoltre, gracious è legato a formule ed espressioni cerimoniose e formali, e può implicare una sfumatura paternalistica o condiscendente: We were honoured by his gracious presence, siamo stati onorati dalla sua cortese presenza; si usa anche in esclamazioni quali Goodness gracious me! e Good gracious!, accipicchia, perbacco!19 -never o ever?-
Nota d'usoGli avverbi never e ever possono essere tradotti entrambi con “mai”: never esprime una negazione, mentre ever implica una possibilità. In generale, never viene usato nelle frasi affermative ed ever nelle frasi interrogative. Inoltre, è possibile utilizzare never nelle frasi interrogative, quando si vuole esprimere sorpresa: Have you never been to Rome?, non sei mai stato a Roma? (in questo caso, si può anche usare ever con il verbo alla forma negativa: Haven't you ever been to Rome?).20 -troppo-
Nota d'usotroppo si traduce con too davanti ad aggettivi e avverbi: Queste scarpe sono troppo grandi per me, these shoes are too big for me; La polizia arrivò troppo tardi, the police arrived too late.Davanti ai nomi, troppo si traduce con too much (al singolare) e too many (al plurale): Ho messo troppo burro nella torta, I've put too much butter in the cake (non I've put too butter in the cake); Hai fatto troppi errori, you've made too many mistakes (non you've made too mistakes).Per tradurre davvero troppo, fin troppo, decisamente troppo ecc. si pone davanti a too, a too much o a too many un modificatore come much, far, all, a lot (colloquiale); non si usa invece very: È davvero troppo vecchio per giocare a tennis, he's much too old to play tennis (non he's very too old…, he's too much old…); Alla festa è venuta decisamente troppa gente, far too many people came to the party; fin troppo spesso, all too often.
