Война здесь - лишь декорация, на фоне которой разворачивается рассказ-воспоминание о любви, что оказалась сильнее препятствий, разлуки и смерти. Эта любовь зарождается и развивается по крайне простому мелодическому рисунку, который движется почти по прямой ко взрывному лиризму финальных сцен. Лишь в тот момент, когда герой дезертирует и проходит по полям сражений и запруженным дорогам, режиссер действительно показывает на экране войну. В его глазах личная трагедия двух героев и незавершенность их земной любви служат лучшим пацифистским воззванием против абсурда и ужаса войны. Хотя дуэт Гэри Купера и Хелен Хейз не всегда бесспорно убедителен (за исключением превосходной финальной встречи), Купер, открытый Генри Кингом, с первых лет работы в кино демонстрирует удивительную способность переходить из миров Штернберга в миры Борзэйги, Лубича, Хоукса или Уэллмена, не теряя при этом ни капли таланта.N.В. Чарли принимает участие в атаке и штурме вражеского окопа. Он вызывается добровольцем на задание и только затем понимает, что вряд ли сумеет отвертеться. Замаскировавшись под пень, Чарли медленно, напоминая пугало, передвигается по территории врага и успевает спасти от казни союзника. Затем Чарли находит укрытие в разрушенном доме, где живет молодая француженка. Появляются немцы, но Чарли разворачивает против них ими же принесенный пулемет. Он едва успевает выскочить из дома, как тот рушится. Чарли спасает француженку, арестованную немцами за помощь врагу. После этого он переодевается в немецкую форму и с помощью француженки и освобожденного им пленника захватывает машину кайзера ― и самого кайзера в придачу. Товарищи по оружию носят его на руках. Но все это был лишь сон: 2 товарища будят Чарли под навесом.► 63-я картина Чаплина и 2-й фильм из 8, снятых для студии «First Nationals». Это также 2-я 3-частевка в его карьере после Собачьей жизни, A Dog's Life. Чаплин семимильными шагами идет к постановке полнометражного фильма. К слову, в 1-м варианте, отвергнутом студией, фильм состоял из 5 частей (в 3-ю телепередачу из цикла Неизвестный Чаплин, Unknown Chaplin, 1983, Кевин Браунлоу включил эпизод, вырезанный из фильма: очень смешную сцену у врача с участием Алберта Остина). С той же невероятной смелостью, которую он позже продемонстрирует в Великом диктаторе, The Great Dictator, Чаплин осмеливается снять по горячим следам сатирическую бурлескную комедию об окопной жизни, полную волнующих моментов. Эта смелость привела публику в восторг, однако, если мысленно перенестись в то время, можно легко представить, что это случилось отнюдь не само собой. Наиболее оригинальна и удивительна 1-я половина фильма: описание повседневной жизни в окопах, где раскрывается чудесная способность главного героя приспособляться к любым невзгодам, а режиссер избегает всякой напыщенности, показывая трагическую смехотворность войны. Затем Кларк снимает 10 номеров в самом роскошном отеле города, чтобы там должным образом отпраздновать возвращение.Лишившись украденного экипажа, Португалец уже не может выполнить обещание, данное графине Марине Селановой, племяннице губернатора Аляски, и отвезти ее в Ситку. Графиня пытается сбежать от князя Семена, за которого должна выйти замуж по приказу дяди. Она просит Кларка заменить Португальца, но тот не чувствует ни малейшей симпатии ни к русскому царю, ни к русской знати и категорически отказывает в просьбе генералу, сопровождающему графиню в путешествии. Зная Кларка как большого почитателя прекрасного пола, графиня решает затеряться среди девиц, вызванных Кларком на праздник, который он собирается задать в отеле.В отеле Марина, выдавшая себя за горничную графини, привлекает внимание Кларка. Он приглашает ее на ужин и показывает ей Сан-Франциско. Взаимная любовь с 1-го взгляда. На рассвете графиня возвращается к себе, словно одурманенная. На следующий день Кларк вывозит ее на прогулку на своем корабле «Салемский паломник», и влюбленные выбирают день свадьбы. Кларк делится с невестой (он до сих пор считает ее простолюдинкой) мечтой всей жизни: выкупить Аляску у русских за счет американской казны и положить конец истреблению котиков, поскольку русские в пылу охоты за мехом не соблюдают правил и не щадят бедных животных. После возвращения в отель графиню ждет неприятный сюрприз: князь Семен силой увозит ее в Ситку. Кларк приходит к алтарю один и в изумлении узнает, кем была его невеста. Прекрасный повод повеселиться для Португальца.Кларк раздосадован, его кредит в отеле исчерпан, и он подумывает продать корабль. Португалец вызывается покупателем. Кларк делает встречное предложение: гонку на кораблях до островов Прибылова. Победитель забирает себе корабль побежденного. Кларк отчаянно рискует и приходит к финишу 1-м. Он даже был готов протаранить «Санта-Изабеллу» Португальца, но Дикон оглушил его ударом по голове. На островах Кларк снова набивает трюм мехами. Португалец, у которого Кларк не стал отбирать корабль после победы на гонке, пытается выкрасть у него добытые шкуры. Но тут появляется канонерка Семена и берет под арест оба экипажа. В Ситке князь приказывает высечь американца на глазах у графини. Чтобы спасти Кларка от виселицы, графиня соглашается стать женой Семена.Пленников отпускают. Но на бракосочетании Семена и графини люди Кларка и Португальца, переодевшись попами, затевают драку и похищают графиню. Кларк убивает Семена на дуэли и взрывает его канонерку, а затем присоединяется к Марине на борту «Салемского паломника». А в 1867 г. США и в самом деле выкупают Аляску.► Один из тех символичных фильмов Уолша, которые словно пересказывают вкратце все его творчество, при этом делая еще один шаг вперед. Каким-то чудом Уолшу в последние 20 лет его творческого пути удавалось снимать примерно по одному такому фильму в год. На этот раз перед нами зрелищная и разнообразная развлекательная картина, основанная на реальных исторических событиях, напоминающих самый экстравагантный роман (покупка американцами всей территории Аляски). Фильм довольно четко поделен на 3 части, которые дают почувствовать необъятную широту диапазона Уолша. В 1-й части до похищения графини Семеном юмористические, яркие, выразительные и забавные нотки служат введением к романтическому порыву, сводящему капитана и графиню перед самым их внезапным расставанием. В густонаселенных сценах режиссура кажется почти бестолковой, настолько она динамична. В сценах между графиней и капитаном Уолш показывает, что всегда был поэтом любовной страсти и судьбоносных встреч. Эта 1-я часть, вполне полноценный фильм сам по себе, дарит зрителю очень симпатичный пересказ всего режиссерского мира Уолша.2-я часть (гонка парусников) – восхитительная марина, этюд движений, где Уолш открывает новую грань своего таланта: описывает стихию и борьбу человека с ней. 3-я часть (сорванная свадьба графини) – приключенческий рассказ в духе романов-фельетонов (невероятный, голливудский, если угодно), где буйствуют краски «Техниколора». Во всех 3 частях главное – это игра, переодевания, соревнование, приносящее героям одно удовольствие; перед этим ничто не в силах устоять, кроме любви. Хотя Мир в его объятьях снимался за гораздо меньший бюджет, нежели Капитан Горацио Хорнблоуэр, Captain Horatio Hornblower R.N., он ничуть не уступает ему ни как фильм о морских приключениях, ни по другим параметрам. Впрочем, в начале 50-х гг. море становится главной стихией в поэтике Уолша. Оно вдохновило режиссера на 4 важные картины: Капитан Горацио Хорyблоуэр, Мир в его объятьях, Пират Черная Борода, Blackbeard, the Pirate, Морские дьяволы, Sea Devils.
