2 κρόμμυον
Grammatical information: n.Meaning: `onion, Allium Cepa' (IA.).Other forms: also κρόμυον (Λ 630, τ 233, Philem. 122; s. below), κρόμβυον (pap.; \< - μμ-, cf. Schwyzer 231).Compounds: Compp., e.g. κρομμυο-πώλης `onion-handler' (pap.).Derivatives: Diminut. κρομ(μ)ύδιον (Gp., Sch.).Origin: Substr. Eur.X[probably]Etymology: Old name of the onion and garlic, which is also attested in Celtic, Germanic and Balto-Slavic, e.g. MIr. crim, Welsh. craf `garlic', OE hramsan (pl.), NEngl. ramsons `wood-garlic', NHG (Bair.) rams `id.', Lith. kermùšė `wilde garlic', Russ. čeremšá `(Germ.) Bärenlauch, Allium ursinum'. The e-vowel of Celtic and Balto-Slavic appears also in κρέμυον (H.) and in GN Κρεμμυών (beside Κρομμ-; around Corinth); so κρομ- (= Germ. hram-) with J. Schmidt KZ 32, 346 (Schwyzer 255 f.) from assimilation in κρεμ-? Also as regards the stemformation the languages agree: IE(?). * kremus-, * kromus-, * kermus- (on krem-: kerm- cf. on βρέφος); only the Celt. forms are not quite clear. (Here also (Illyr.?) GN Cremōna (Venetia), s. Krahe Die Spr. d. Illyrier 1, 104.). The widespread geminate - μμ- is unexplained (pace Schwyzer Glotta 5, 194). - Pok. 580 f., Fraenkel Wb. s. kermùšė, Vasmer Wb. s. čeremšá. On the facts Schrader-Nehring Reallexikon 2, 710ff. - Beekes, 125 Jahre Idg. in Graz (2000) 29 considers the word as non-IE.Page in Frisk: 2,23-24Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κρόμμυον

18 μόκρων
Grammatical information: ?Meaning: μόκρωνα τὸν ὀξύν ᾽Ερυθραῖοι H.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Fur. 341, 372 identifies this with ἀμακρῶτις = ἀμπελόπρασον `wild leek, Allium Ampeloprasum' (Ps-Dsc. 2, 150). I do not know on what grounds Furnée bases this identification. See DELG.Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μόκρων

19 μῶλυ
Grammatical information: n.Meaning: name of an unknown plant (κ 305, Com. adesp. 641), by later authors (Plin., Dsc., Ps.-Dsc., Poet. de herb.) differently identied, after Thphr. HP 9. 15, 7 Arcad. name of a kind of garlic `Allium nigrum'; also μῶλυς ῥίζα (Lyk. 679). See Ferrari Ist. Lomb. 88, 12ff.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin](X)Etymology: Foreign word of unknown origin; cf. Henry Class. Rev. 20, 434 f., André Rev. de phil. 84, 234. For the u-stem cf. μίσυ, βράθυ, σῶρυ a.o. (Chantraine Form. 119). Rejectable IE etymologies by Kretschmer KZ 31, 386 (to Skt mū́lam `root'; thus a.o. Güntert Götter und Geister 92ff.), Oštir Don. nat. Schrijnen 286ff. After Cocco Arch. glottol. it. 40, 10ff. Mediterranean word to μαλάχη etc.; by André (s.v.) rightly doubted. Cf. also Neumann Heth. u. luw. Sprachgut 28. s. on μώλυζα s.v., which has a non-Greek suffix (cf. κόνυζα, ὅρυζα); so prob. 20 πράσον
Grammatical information: n.Meaning: `leek, Allium porrum', also of a kind of seaweed like leek (com., Thphr.).Compounds: Compp., e.g. πρασο-ειδής `leek-like', from the colour (Hp., Arist.), θαλασσό-πρασον n. of a seaweed (Ath. Mech.).Derivatives: 1. πράσ-ιος (Pl.), - ινος (Arist., LXX), - ιανός (M. Ant.), - ώδης (Thphr.) `leek-colour, blue-green' (Capelle RhM 101, 35); 2. - ῖτις f. n. of a stone, after the colour (Thphr.; Redard 59f.); 3. - ιον n. plant-name `horehound, Marrubium etc.' (Hp., Arist., Thphr.; Andrews ClassPhil. 56, 76); from this πρασίτης οἶνος? (v.l. in Dsc. 5, 48; Redard 98); 4. πρασιά, Ion. - ιή, mostly pl. - ιαί, f. `garden-bed', prop. "leek-bed" (Od., hell.), pl. att. Demos and town in Laconia (Th.), with - ιάζομαι, - ιόομαι `to be divided in beds' (Aq.); Scheller Oxytonierung 67; 5. πρασίζω `to be leek-coloured' (Dsc.); 6. Πρασσαῖος m. nickname of a frog (Batr.; - σσ- hypocoristic; ?).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: The traditional identification with Lat. porrum (since Fick and Curtius) would lead to IE *pr̥som; the remarkable maintenance of the - σ- reminds of δασύς (s.v. w. lit.) beside Lat. densus. For a loan from a common source (Schwyzer 58) factual considerations can be adduced; cf. Schrader-Nehring Reallex. 2, 710ff., to this Vycichl Sprache 9, 21 f. (Anatol.-Sum.[?]). Further lit. w. other hypotheses (to be rejected) in WP. 2, 84, Walde LEW2 and W. -Hofmann s. porrum. -- If the word is Pre-Greek, this may explain the - σ- (not in Furnée).Page in Frisk: 2,589Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πράσον
