Она с трудом ладит с коллегами, которые считают ее диковатой и замкнутой, и однажды в магазине чуть было не теряет сознание. Всю ночь прогуляв по опустевшему городу, на рассвете она пытается прыгнуть с моста в реку. Ее спасает прохожий и отводит ее в тесный подвал, где живет. Там он прислуживает ей с абсолютной и почти комичной преданностью, но не позволяет выходить на улицу. Однажды вечером он возвращается домой пьяным. Начинается драка, и девушка бьет его ногой в глаз. На следующий день он не помнит, что было с ним накануне. Он продолжает держать девушку взаперти. «Вы ― мой последний шанс», – говорит он и продолжает заботливо опекать ее. Теперь он ходит с повязкой на глазу. Через некоторое время он просит ее руки. Девушка говорит, что это она выбила ему глаз. Он в слезах отвечает, что все равно не может жить без нее. Он открывает дверь. Она долго бродит по городу, затем возвращается в подвал. Приходит зима. Падает снег. Мать, которой девушка дала свой адрес, без предупреждения приходит в подвал. Девушка знакомит ее с мужем. У них будет ребенок. Мать потрясена до глубины души, но ей остается лишь смириться с положением.► 2-й и последний на сегодняшний день фильм Джека Гарфайна. Однажды режиссер заявил, что может снимать, лишь когда влюбляется в сюжет с первого взгляда, а за всю жизнь это произошло с ним всего дважды. Что-то дикое – некий эквивалент Одиноких, Lonesome, снятый 30-ю годами позднее. Зритель же получает возможность сравнить 2 разных подхода к схожим сюжетам и подвести некий итог социальных и формальных изменений в американском кино. Город изменился к худшему (теснота и некоммуникабельность умножились во сто крат, преступность выросла, повсюду царит адское одиночество). Но главное – отношения между мужчиной и женщиной, странной, невротичной, почти немыслимой пары; эти отношения прекрасно отражают главные особенности городской жизни и помогают спастись от них. Игра актеров далека от прозрачной лиричности фильмов Фейоша; в ней чувствуется сильное влияние «Актерской студии» Ли Стрэсбёрга – школы, с которой Гарфайн, ученик Казана, был тесно связан в своей театральной деятельности. (Отметим, что он был ассистентом Казана на фильме Куколка, Baby Doll, 1956, открывшем миру Кэрролл Бейкер, главную актрису картины Что-то дикое, впоследствии Гарфайн женился на ней.) Эта манера игры выражает психические травмы, комплексы и определенное безумие персонажей. К этому добавьте германскую, экспрессионистскую тяжеловесность, свойственную режиссуре Гарфайна и операторской работе Шюффтана; зритель воспринимает ее как невыносимое давление цивилизации на совесть и хрупкое душевное равновесие действующих лиц.
