Чаплин предстает всего лишь живописателем нравов, но зато каким: ироничным и жестоким, холодным и реалистичным – он не испытывает ни снисходительности, ни сочувствия к 3 главным персонажам, которых он наделил удивительной сложностью характеров и столь же удивительной аморальностью. В сюжете они получают по заслугам, и их судьба в безжалостном, но, в конечном счете, «справедливом» мире во всех отношениях достойна их характера. Таков суровый урок этого фильма, снятого без сценария, при полной свободе вдохновения и головокружительной виртуозности автора. Парижанка была десятилетиями недоступна для зрителя, однако сегодня по-настоящему поражают ее современность, сухая выразительность, трезвая игра актеров, точность повествования, острая, многозначительно лаконичная раскадровка. В картине царит абсолютный классицизм. Никаких прикрас, никаких пустот. Манжу и прочие актеры играют с такой силой и такими скупыми средствами, какие были невиданным явлением в начале 20-х гг., поэтому на самых проницательных зрителей фильм произвел эффект разорвавшейся бомбы. Можно даже почти сожалеть о том, что Чаплин так редко отказывался от привычных атрибутов своего экранного персонажа и работал только в режиссерском кресле.
