На начальном этапе существования успешно провела несколько акций против сегрегации, используя методы гражданского неповиновения [ civil disobedience], сидячие демонстрации [ sit-in] и т.п. В 1966 президентом организации стал С. Кармайкл [ Carmichael, Stokely], при которым действия организации сместились в сторону большего радикализма и воинственности. Кармайкл считал М. Л. Кинга [ King, Martin Luther, Jr. (MLK)] "дядюшкой Томом" [ Uncle Tom], войну во Вьетнаме [ Vietnam War] называл расистской. Когда были приняты закон о гражданских правах 1964 [ Civil Rights Act of 1964] и закон об избирательных правах 1965 [ Voting Rights Act], а администрация Р. Никсона [ Nixon, Richard Milhous] сократила военное присутствие США в Индокитае, движение потеряло основную протестную базу.
