84 ἀμβλύς
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `blunt; dim, faint (of sight)' (ion. att.).Derivatives: ἀμβλυώσσω (- ώττω) `be short-sighted' (Hp.), from *ἀμβλυ-ωψ, cf. ἀμβλυ-ωπός, also ἀμβλωπός, ἀμβλῶψ; Schwyzer 733 ζ, Sommer Nominalkomp. 3ff.,Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: ἀμβλύς can be from *ἀμλ-ύς. The connection with ἀμαλός is a mere guess which explains nothing. Perhaps to ἀμβλ(ακ)ίσκω (not from * h₂mlh₃us with Rix, MSS 27, 1970, 90, which would give *αμαλυς). One also tried to compare ἀμαλδύνω.Page in Frisk: 1,89-90Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἀμβλύς

Brunel Aspect verbal 71, 155, 174, 184.Derivatives: ( ἀπ-)εἰκασία `picture, comparison, suspicion' (Ion.-Att.; on the formation Schwyzer 469) with εἰκάσιμος `aestimabilis' (gloss.; Arbenz Die Adj. auf - ιμος 99), ( ἀπ-)εἴκασμα `representation' (A., Pl.), ( ἀπ-, ἐπ-)εἰκασμός `supposition' (D. H.); εἰκαστός `comparable' (S. u. a.), εἰκαστικός `which belongs to (making) a picture (Pl. a. o).Origin: IE [Indo-European] [1129] *u̯eik- `resemble, fit'Etymology: Four-syllabic ἐϊκάσδω presupposes like synonymous Hom. (Ϝ)ε(Ϝ)ίσκω an original *ϜεϜικάζω. Both formations are new factitive presents to the perf. (Ϝ)έ-(Ϝ)οικ-α `be like, resemble', du. (Ϝ)έ-(Ϝ)ικ-τον, pret. (Ϝ)έ-(Ϝ)ικ-το (Schwyzer 735). 86 κυέω
Grammatical information: v.Other forms: κυήσω (Hdt.), κυῆσαι (IA.), κεκύηκα (hell.), κυηθῆναι, - θήσεσθαι (late); older aorist κῡ́σασθαι (Il.) with causal active κῦσαι (A.), younger present κύω (since Arist., LXX); also κυί̄σκομαι, -ω (IA.);Compounds: sometimes with prefix, e.g. ἐπι-, ἀπο-, συγ-κυέομαι, - κυίσκομαι (- ίσκω), ὑπο-κυσαμένη (Il.).Derivatives: Verbal nouns: κύημα `foetus, embryo' (IA.), - ησις `conception, pregnancy, embryo' (Pl., Arist., Thphr.), κύος n. = κύημα (Ar. Fr. 609, inscr. Keos) with κυόεις (Kos, IIIa); ἀπο-κυη-τικός `capable of giving birth' (Astrol.), κυητήριος `promoting pregnancy' (Hp.), κυήτωρ `begetter' (Cyran.; of a bird); κυηρόν ἔγκυον, ἁπαλόν, βλαστόν H. With κυέω can be equated Skt. śváyati `be or become great, strong, powerful, get strong, increase': IE. *ḱuh₂-éi̯e-(ti), (Schulze KZ 27, 605 = Kl. Schr. 363); h₂ is shown by κύαρ. Beside this secondary present stands in very old times the primary middle aorist κῡ́σασθαι (Skt. has the themat. root-aor. á-śv-a-t [would be Gr. *ἔ-κυ-ε; to this as innovation κύω?]). - From the many forms, esp. petrified and isolated verbal nouns, we mention the pres. ptc. Av. si-sp-i-mna-'rising up' (of a river-wave; cf. κῦμα), Welsh cyw m. `young animal' (IE. *ḱu₂o- m.; cf. ἔγ-κυος, κυο-φορέω, κύος n.), Lat. inciēns `pregnant' (loan from ἔγκυος, s. Ernout-Meillet; diff. W.-Hofmann); three more forms s. κύριος (where also on the ablaut); [not κύαμος, πᾶς, πέπαμαι]. On suppoed connection to words for `hollow, empty' s. κύαρ. - Pok. 592ff., W.-Hofmann s. inciēns and cavus. - Hitt. šuwa- `swell' (?), Götze Lang. 30, 404, must remain separate because of the anlaut.Page in Frisk: 2,42-43Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κυέω

Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to putrify, to decay' (Il.).Other forms: only pres.stem except καταπέπυθα κατερρύηκα H.; πύθω, fut. πύσω, aor. πῦσαι ( πύσαι Call.) `cause to rot', both also with κατα- (Il.; on the date of the attestations Wackernagel Unt. 133).Derivatives: Besides πύον, πύος n. `purulence' (Hp., Arist.); as 2. member in σαρκό-πυον n. `the festering of flesh' with - πυώδης (Hp.); adj., e.g. ἔμ-πυος `festering, full of festering ulcers' (Hp., Att.) with ἐμπυό-ομαι `to fester' (Hp.). πυθεδόνες pl. f. `festering ulcers' (hell.; after σηπεδών a.o.). Denominatives w. prefix: ἐκ-, ἐμ-, ἀπο-, δια-πυ-έω (- έομαι), - ίσκομαι (late - ίσκω) `to fester' with - πύ-ησις, - ημα, - ηματικός, - ητικός, - ικός (Hp. a. other medic.); late simplicia: πύ-ησις, - ητικός (Aret., Gal.).Etymology: Beside the θ-enlargement in πύ̄-θομαι, - θω ( βρί-θω, πλή-θω a.o.; Schwyzer 703), which can also be supposed for πύσω, πῦσαι, Sankrit has a yot-present pū́-ya-ti `rot' with the backformation pū́ya- m. n. `festering, pus' (so not identical with πύον), in Balt. a nasalpresent pū-nù and pū-vù (i.e. pų-vù) `id.', in Germ. an isolated ptc. OWNo. fūinn `rotten'. On an unenlarged primary verb go back also the nouns πύον, πύος, which have their closest agreements in Arm. hu, gen. hu-oy (o-st.) `festering blood' and Lat. pūs n. (from *puu̯os or *peu̯os?). Of the very frequent representatives of this goup, which may have its point of departure in an interjection pu `pfui', we mention only Lat. pūteō `rot', pŭter, - tris, - tre `rot', Germ., e.g. Goth. fūls ' rot'; further forms w. rich lit. in WP. 2, 82, Pok. 848f., W.-Hofmann s. pūs, Fraenkel s. pū́ti, Mayrhofer s. pū́yati. To be rejected Specht Sprache 1, 46 (: with `pure' in Lat. pūrus etc. identical). -- Here also 2. πυός `beestings'; s. v.Page in Frisk: 2,621-622Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πύθομαι
