81 ἀμφί
ἀμφί (cf. ἀμφίς, ἄμφω): on both sides; the distinction between ἀμφί and περί (‘around’) is of course not always observed; the two words are used together, ὄχθαι δ' ἀμφὶ περὶ μέγαλ ἴαχον, ‘round about,’ Il. 21.10, but on the other hand are sometimes interchangeable, ἀμφὶ δὲ κῦανέην κάπετον, περὶ δ' ἕρκος ἔλασσεν | κασσιτέρου, Il. 18.564; cf. Il. 23.561 f.—I. adv., on both sides (or ends, or above and below, Il. 6.115), about, around; here belongs the so-called use ‘in tmesi,’ and in many instances where the word seems to govern a subst., it is really adverbial, and the case of the subst. must be explained independently, ἀμφ' ὀβελοῖσιν ἔπειραν (ὀβ. dat. instr.), ἀμφὶ δὲ χαῖται | ὤμοις άίσσονται (ὤμ. local dat.). In case of an apparent ambiguity of construction the presumption is in favor of adverbial interpretation in Homer.—II. prep., (1) w. gen., about, concerning; ἀμφί τινος μάχεσθαι (Il. 16.825), ἀείδειν (Od. 8.267).— (2) w. dat., (a) local, Il. 2.388, Il. 3.328 ; ἤριπε δ' ἀμφ, αὐτῷ, ‘over,’ Il. 4.493 ; τὴν κτεῖνε ἀμφ' ἐμοί, ‘near,’ Od. 11.423, Il. 9.470 ; ἀμφὶ πυρί, ‘on,’ etc.— (b) causal, ‘for,’ ἀμφί τινι ἄλγεα πάσχειν, μάχεσθαι, δικάζεσθαι, εἴρεσθαι (Od. 19.95), ‘as regards’ (Il. 7.408). — (3) w. acc., local, mostly to denote motion or extension in space, ἀμφ' ἅλα ἔλσαι Ἀχαιούς, Il. 1.409; ἀμφὶ ἄστυ ἔρδειν ἷρά, ‘around in,’ Il. 11.706 ; οἱ ἀμφὶ Πρίαμον, ‘Priam and his followers.’A Homeric dictionary (Greek-English) (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ομηρικό λεξικό) > ἀμφί

88 ἔρχατος
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: φραγμός H.Other forms: Also ἕρκατος φραγμός, ἑρκάτη φυλακή.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: In itself the change κ\/χ might point to a Pre-Greek word. One may have been influenced by ἔρκος (s.v.). There is also ἑρκάνη, ὁρκάνη. Latte corrects ἑρκάτη in ἑρκάνη, which is in any case too uncertain. Cf. also ὄρχατος `orchard'; perhaps adapted to ἐρχατόωντο (ξ 15), which belongs to εἴργω; s. v. - Acc. to Fraenkel KZ 72, 193ff. to Lith. sérgėti `protect, guard'.Page in Frisk: 1,572Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἔρχατος

91 ὄρχαμος
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: in Hom. only in the formula ὄρχαμος ἀνδρῶν, ἄρχαμε λαῶν, later ὄ. στρατοῦ (A. Pers. 129 [lyr.]).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Etymology and meaning debated. Of old (s. Curtius 189f.) often as `leader' derived from ἄρχω w. superlat. μο-suffix; the ο-vowel, if not from ablaut (e.g. ὄγμος: ἄγω), can be Aeolic (Kretschmer KZ 36, 268, Brugmann Grundr.2 II: 1, 226). Diff. Bechtel BB 30, 270 a. Lex. s.v. (agreeing a.o. Specht Ursprung 252 a. 255, Fraenkel KZ 72, 195): like ἔρκος Αχαιῶν as "protecting wall (of the men)" to ὄρχατος a. cogn. (s. ὄρχος). Still diff. (to ὄρχος `row') Wright ClassRev. 29, 111 f. - Furnée 342 thinks that ἀ-\/ὀ- (in ἄρχω) points to a Pre-Greek word.Page in Frisk: 2,432Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ὄρχαμος
