τίθημι, setzen, stellen, legen; zunächst (1) im örtlichen Sinne: an einen bestimmten Ort hinsetzen, hinlegen, hinbringen; οὐχ ἱκετηρίαν οὐδεὶς τριήραρχος ἔϑηκε, sc. ἐπὶ τῷ βωμῷ, eigtl. den Zweig, das Zeichen der Hilfeflehenden auf den Altar legen. Von den Präpositionen, die damit verbunden werden, ist zu merken, daß sehr gewöhnlich ἐν dabeisteht, so daß ähnlich, wie beim lat. ponere, collocare in aliquo loco, mit dem Stellen u. Legen zugleich das darauf folgende Sein od. sich Befinden am Orte ausgedrückt wird; ἐν χείρεσσ' Οδυσῆϊ τίϑει, was so geläufig war, daß es den allgemeinen Begriff des Einhändigens, Darreichens, Gebens erhielt. Daran reihen sich ursprünglich auch örtlich zu nehmende, auf das Geistige gehende Vrbdgn: einem einen Gedanken, einen Rat, Mut in die Seele legen, eingeben; κότον ϑέσϑαι τινί, gegen einen Groll bei sich festsetzen, ihm fortwährend grollen; ϑέσϑαι ϑυμὸν ἄγριον ἐν στήϑεσσιν, Zorn in der Brust festsetzen; ohne acc., ἐν φρεσὶ ϑέσϑαι, bei sich festsetzen, im Herzen beschließen, worauf bedacht sein; übertr., ἐπὶ φρένα ϑῆχ' ἱεροῖσιν, er richtete seinen Geist, seine Aufmerksamkeit auf die Opfer; κρέα ϑέμενος ἐπὶ τὰ γόνατα, er legte sich das Fleisch auf die Kniee; μὴ χαμαὶ τιϑεὶς τὸν σὸν πόδα, den Fuß auf die Erde setzen; übh. τιϑέναι πόδα für gehen; (2) einsetzen, errichten, aufstellen, gründen; στήλην τίϑεσϑαι, für sich aufrichten; auch von Pflanzen: φυτά, einsetzen; ἀγάλματα, Weihgeschenke im Tempel aufstellen. (a) τέρματα, ein Ziel stecken, aufstellen, festsetzen; auch τιμήν τινι, einem eine Ehre bestimmen, zuerkennen; (b) ἀγῶνα, einen Wettkampf ansetzen, festsetzen; τὰ Πύϑια δι' ἑαυτοῦ ϑεῖναι, sie anstellen u. feiern, so daß er der Ordner ist. Häufiger noch von den Kampfpreisen: sie aussetzen; τιϑέναι εἰς τὸ κοινόν, zum Gemeingut machen, zum Genuß für alle preisgeben; (c) übh. anordnen, festsetzen, bestimmen; νόμον τιϑέναι, ein Gesetz geben, von dem, der nach eigenem Gutdünken Gesetze gibt, oder dem Gesetzgeber, der vom Volke dazu erwählt ist und für das Volk die Gesetze schreibt; so von Solon; sich ein Gesetz machen, geben, vom Volke bei demokratischer Verfassung, der gewöhnlichste Ausdruck, wo von griechischer Gesetzgebung die Rede ist. Auch absolut: verfügen, verordnen; οὕτω νῦν Ζεὺς ϑείη, so verfüge, gebe es jetzt Zeus; c. inf., befehlen. Auch als Strafe festsetzen. Τέλος ϑέμεν, ein Ende machen; κήρυγμα ϑεῖναι, eine Bekanntmachung durch den Herold erlassen; ἐν ἀπόρῳ εἴχοντο ϑέσϑαι τὸ παρόν, Anordnungen zu treffen; (d) ὄνομα ϑεῖναί τινι, einen Namen für einen festsetzen, ihm einen Namen beilegen, geben; (e) beisetzen, von Toten; (f) Geld niederlegen bei einem, bes. als Pfand; das med. wird vom Gläubiger gebraucht, als Pfand nehmen, also ὁ ϑείς, der ein Pfand niederlegt, ὁ ϑέμενος, der, bei dem er es niederlegt; χρήματα ϑέσϑαι παρά τινι, Geld bei einem niederlegen, es ihm anvertrauen. Auch Geld erlegen, bezahlen; τόκον τιϑέναι, Zinsen entrichten; (3) τὴν ψῆφον τιϑέναι ist eigentlich das Rechensteinchen aufs Brett setzen, damit rechnen, zählen. Dah. ψῆφον τίϑεσϑαι, sein Stimmtäfelchen abgeben, bes. bei Wahlen und gerichtlichen Abstimmungen; übh. seine Meinung, sein Urteil abgeben; eben so τίϑεσϑαι τὴν γνώμην περί τινος, seine Meinung worüber sagen; daher τίϑεσϑαί τινι, sc. ψῆφον, einem sein Stimmtäfelchen, seine Stimme geben, beistimmen; κἀγὼ ταύτῃ τῇ γνώμῃ τίϑεμαι, auch ich stimme dieser Meinung bei. Dah. übertr., meinen, wofür ansehen, es setzen als; οὐ τίϑημ' ἐγὼ ζῆν τοῠτον, ich erachte das nicht, daß der lebt, das nenne ich nicht ein Leben. ἐφημερία, ας, ἡ (s. ἡμέρα and next entry; SEG VII 29 [I B.C.]) a class of priests who performed daily (hence the name) duties for a fixed period in the temple at Jerusalem, division (LXX; cp. Jos., Ant. 12, 265). There were 24 such divisions, each one of which took care of the temple duties for one week (1 Ch 23:6; 28:13 al.). Schürer II 245–50; Billerb. II 55ff. The ἐ.
