(hell.; cf. Chantraine Formation 393f.); ` Ηλιάδες f. pl. `daughters of the sun' (Parm., A. R. ; also sg. as adj. [Luc.]) with masc. ` Ηλιάδης `son of the sun' (Str., D. S.); s. Chantraine 356 u. 362f.; ἡλιώδης `sunlike' (Chaerem.), ` Ηλιών m. month name (Termessos), ἡλίτης ( λίθος Dam. Isid. 233; cf. Redard Les noms grec en - της 54). (Str.) with ἡλίασις `exposure to the sun' (Gal., D. C.), ἡλιαστήριον `place in the sun' (Str., Pap.). 3. ἡλιάω `expose to the sun, be like the sun' (Arist.).Etymology: Cretan ἀβέλιος in H. (after Herakleid. Mil. Pamphyl.; cf. Bechtel Dial. 2, 667), i. e. ἀϜέλιος, points to an original *σᾱϜέλιος, differing from Skt. sū́rya- `sun' (beside sū́ra-) only in ablaut. Both languages have an l-stem, IE *sāu̯el-, * sūl- (cf. Skt. súvar n. \< *suu̯el; full grade also in Lith. sáulė, Welsh haul, zero grade e. g. in OIr. sūil `eye') with a personifiing i̯o-suffix. The basis is a neutral heteroclitic l-n-stem, still seen in Av. hvarǝ (= Skt. s(ú)var), gen. xvǝ̄ng (\< PIIr. *su̯an-s) and also seen in Germanic in the change between Goth. sauil, ONord. OE. sōl and Goth. sunno, OE. sunne ` sun'. Further see W.-Hofmann and Ernout-Meillet s. sōl, Vasmer Russ. et. Wb. s. sólnice. Connection with IE *su̯el- `burn' (s. εἵλη) is impossible. - In Etr. avil `year' Maresch Μνημης χάριν 2, 27f. proposes to see a loan from Gr. ἁϜέλιος.Page in Frisk: 1,631-632Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἥλιος

114 σκυρθάλιος
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: νεανίσκος H. Also σκυρθάλια (- ιᾶς cod.) Θεόφραστος τοὺς ἐφήβους οὕτω φησὶ καλεῖσθαι, Διονύσιος δε τοὺς μείρακας H.Derivatives: Besides σκυρθάνια τοὺς ἐφήβους οἱ Λάκωνες Phot. With metathesis σκύθραξ μεῖραξ, ἔφηβος H. Without σ- (dissim. because of Lac. - σ- from - θ-?) in κυρσίον μειράκιον H., Lac. κυρσάνιος `id.' (Ar. Lys.); cf. Bechtel Dial. 2, 376.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Formation like νηφ-άλιος a. o. Since Fick 1, 142 compared with Skt. kr̥dhú- `shortened, mutilated', á-skr̥dho-yu- `not shortened, not needy', to which further a widespread Lithuanian group, a. o. skurstù, skurdaũ skur̃sti `suffer want', `stay back in growth, languish', nu-skur̃dęs `impoverished, neglected'; one may also compare Lat. cordus `born late' (Persson Beitr. 1, 164ff.); s. except Bq and WP. 2, 590 esp. Fraenkel s. skur̃sti w. further references. -- The Gr. υ-vowel would then have to be considered as zero grade (Schwyzer 351, also W.-Hofmann s. cordus w. lit.) [which is improbable]. -- The variation may point to a Pre-Greek word.Page in Frisk: 2,743Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σκυρθάλιος

115 Νηρεύς
Νηρεύς, -έωςGrammatical information: m.Meaning: Sea-god, son of Pontos and Gaia (h. Ap. 319, Hes. Th. 233 a. 240).Other forms: Ion. - ῆος.Derivatives: Νηρεῖος in Νηρεῖα τέκνα = `fishes' (Euphro 8, 2) and Νήρειον, - άδιον = δελφίνιον, plantname (Ps.-Dsc.) [referring also to νηρόν `(fresh) water' (s.v.)? improbable. -- Besides Νηρηΐς, - εΐς, pl. - ίδες f. `Nereids, seanymphs' (Il.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: As Νηρεύς has only relevance as father of the Nereiden (v. Wilamowitz Glaube 1, 219, Nilsson Gr. Rel. 1, 240) (in Hom. prob. mentioned as ἅλιος γέρων), we hould consider with Bosshardt 122, whether the father was called afters his daughters. He may also be indicated as Πρωτεύς (West ad Hes. Th. 233). As basis of Νηρη-(Ϝ)ίδ- also other stems have been considered beside Νηρεύς; cf. Schwyzer 465, Chantraine Form. 345 f. -- Fick 1, 503 referred to Lith. nérti `submerge', s. Fraenkel Sybaris 40 f., Wb. s. nérti 1. To be considered further νηρίδας τὰς κοίλας πέτρας and νηρόν τὸ ταπεινόν H.(?) -- Diff. Schulze Q. 475, Brugmann Sächs. Ges. Ber. 1899, 213: from *σνᾱϜερο- to νάω `well, stream'; noncommittal attempts. -- Cf. WP. 2, 693 f.; also Kretschmer Glotta 15, 64. An IE etymology seems hardly to be expected; as the ending suggests the word will be Pre-Greek.See also: s. νάω.Page in Frisk: 2,Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > Νηρεύς
