Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `barley' (Nic. Al. 106).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Hesychius calls the word Cyprian; Schol. on Ζ 506 Thessalian as name for food in general; cf. Bechtel Dial. 1, 204. Unclear ἀκόστιλα ἐλάχιστα H. κοσταί = ἀκοστή H. may have lost its vowel, Kuiper 1956 [FS Kretschmer], 221. - Connected with Lat. acus - eris n. `Granne, Spreu', Goth. ahs, OHG ahir n. etc. `ear (of corn)'. Frisk: "Der Bildung nach wäre ἀκοσ-τή als substantiviertes Femininum ("die Grannige") mit lat. onus-tus, venus-tus ( locus-ta?) zu vergleichen, was natürlich möglich ist" shows the weakness of this explanation; s. Schwyzer 503; but one wouls expect e-grade * akes-. Szemerényi Gnomon 43, 1961, 652 proposes * ako(n)stā \< * akont-tā. The form in - στ- (cf. ἄκαστος) rather points to foreign origin, as would the forms with - γ-, and κοσταί, if these are old.See also: Cf. also ἄχνη.Page in Frisk: 1,56-57Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἀκοστή

17 ἄκρος
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `at the farthest point, topmost, outermost' (Il.). Old ἄκρα f., ἄκρον n. `highest or farthest point, headland, cape'; Hom. κατ' ἄκρης ( πόλιος) `from the highest point down' hence `completely, utterly', also κατ' ἄκρηθεν (which became κατὰ κρῆθεν through association with κάρα), s. Leumann Hom. Wörter 56ff.Compounds: ἀκρόπολις (Od.; the Iliad still has ἄκρη πόλις, Frisk IF 52, 282ff., Risch IF 59, 20); ἀκραής often interpreted as `blowing vehemently', but prob. orig.`blowing on\/from the heights'.Derivatives: ἄκρις, - ιος f. `hill-top, mountain peak' (Od.), always pl.; s. on ὄκρις. ἀκραῖος `dwelling on heights'.Origin: IE [Indo-European] [18] *h₂eḱ- `sharp, pointed; stone (?)'Etymology: The root *h₂eḱ- is widespread in IE, and ther are several r-derivatives: Skt. áśri- f. `corner, sharp side', catur-aśra- `quadrangular', Lat. ācer, - ris, -re (with unexplained length), W. PN Aχrotalus `with high forehead', OIr. ér `high', OLith. aštras, OCS ostrъ `sharp'. (For akro- in Illyrian s. Krahe Pannonia 1937, 310 n. 40, Karg WuS NF. 4, 183.) - Heth. ḫekur `rock(point)' is unrelated. - See further ἀκη, ἀκμή and ὄκρις. Connection with the root *h₂eḱ- was often unjustly assumed by modern scholarship, see e.g. ἀκαλήφη, ἀκόστη, ἄκορνα, ἀκριβής.Page in Frisk: 1,59-60Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἄκρος

18 ἄχνη
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `foam, froth; chaff' (Il.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Cf. ἄχυρον `chaff'. Also, with different velar, Lat. agna (\< * ac-nā) `ear of corn', Goth. ahana `chaff' usw. (with the root of ἄκων). ἄχνη could have a suffix - snā (Schwyzer 327); for the -s- cf. ἀκοστή). Expressive aspiration (DELG s. ἄχωρ) seems improbable. But the connection with ἄχυρον (q.v.) shows that this is a Pre-Greek word.Page in Frisk: 1,202Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἄχνη

19 ὀξύς
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `sharp, stinging', of taste `sour, tartish', of the voice `clear, loud', of inner and outer movement `fierce, acute, rapid' (Il.).Compounds: Very often as 1. member, also with prefix, e.g. ἄπ-οξυς `pointed' (Hp., Dsc., Gal.), backformation from ἀπ-οξύνω, s. Strömberg Prefix Studies 41 f.Derivatives: From it ὄξος n. `wine vinegar' (s. v.); ὀξύτης, - ητος f. `sharpness, sourness, acuteness', gramm. `high-tonedness' (IA.); ὀξύς, - ύδος f. `dock, Rumex' (Plin., Gal.; cf. ἐμύς, κροκύς and Chantraine Form. 347 f.). Denomin. verb ὀξύνω, also w. prefix, esp. παρ-, `to sharpen, to whet, to sour, to heat' (IA.) with ὄξυντρα n. pl. `payment for a sharpener' (hell. inscr.), ὀξύσματα n. pl. `whetting, sharpening' (Delos IIIa), παροξυσμός m. `irritation, embitterment' (Hp., D.), - ντικός `enlivening, irritating, embittering' (IA.), - νταί pl. H. ( ὀξύντης Hdn. 1, 77, 25; cf. Fraenkel Nom. ag. 2, 205).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Without exact non-Greek agreement. One compares ὄκρις (s. v.), beside which with much more usual α-vowel ἄκρος etc.; in ὀξ-ύς one assumes the reduced grade oḱs- of the s-stem assumed in ἀκοστή (s. v.), ἀμφ-ήκης (uncertain, s. ἠκή) a.o. WP. 1, 31, Pok. 21, W.-Hofmann s. 2. ācer, 1. acus. Cf. ὀξίνα. - The etymology is quite unconvincing and must be rejected. Is the word Pre-Greek? - To be rejected Haas Ling. Posn. 3, 78 (s. on ξαίνω).Page in Frisk: 2,401Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ὀξύς
