Strömberg Fischn. 44 w. lit., also Thompson Fishes s. v.Etymology: The series πίμπρημι: πιμπράναι: πρήσω: πρῆσαι: πρησθῆναι: πρήθω agrees exactly to that of πίμπλημι: πιμπλάναι etc.; s.v. and Schwyzer 688f., 703 a. 761 w. further details. How the individual forms are to be evaluated and how the system was formed, cannot be reconstructed as there are no agreeing forms outside Greek. For comparison many words with pr- have been adduced, e.g. Skt. próthati `cough, sneeze', pruṣṇóti `sprinkle', Germ., e.g. OWNo. frūsa, frysa, Swed. frusta `sneeze', Hitt. parāi- ( prāi-?) `breathe, blow, stir up'. πρίστις, ἡ, 1) ein großer, übrigens unbestimmter Meerfisch, wie κῆτος, eigtl. ein Wallfisch, od. der Sprüh-, od. Spritzfisch, nach dem Wasserstrahl benannt, den mehrere dieser Thiere von sich blasen (nach Buttm. Lexil. I p. 109 aber eigtl. der Sägefisch, πρίστης); Leon. Tar. 95 (VII, 506); Ath. VIII, 333 f. Auch πρῆστις findet sich. – 2) Eine Art Kriegsschiff, wahrscheinlich wegen seiner langen, einem großen Fische ähnlichen Gestalt; Pol. 17, 1; λέμβοι σὺν ταῖς πρίστεσι, 16, 2, 9; navis rostrata, Liv. 32, 32, vgl. 35, 26. 44, 28. – Bei Ath. XI, 784 a u. sonst auch eine Art großer Pokal.
