It is restored in an ins fr. the Asclepiaeum on Cos A 26f; 41 by RHerzog: ARW 10, 1907, 402; 408f.—Not in LXX nor in Hellenistic Jewish wr.) in Ac it plainly means strangled, choked to death (so also Ps.-Clem., Hom. 7, 8; 8, 19) of animals killed without having the blood drained fr. them, whose flesh the Israelites were forbidden to eat (Lev 17:13f. In this connection Philo, Spec. Leg. 4, 122 opposes those who are ἄγχοντες and ἀποπνίγοντες animals.—Hierocles 26, 480 the Pythagorean dietary laws forbid τῶν ἀθύτων σαρκῶν μετάληψις=of meat fr. animals that have not been properly slaughtered) Ac 15:20, 29; 21:25 (D omits it in all three places).—On the questions raised by this word s. Etymology: Popular expressive verb without certain connection; one has thought of a cross of several words. The anlaut reminds of πνέω, the auslaut of φρύγω, φώγω, the vowel of κνίψ a. cogn., also of MLG knīpen (s. Κνίφων), but there is no basis for a certain decision. The comparison with some Germ. words for `snuffle', e.g. OHG fnaskazzen (Fick BB 7, 95 etc.; s. Bq and WP. 2, 85), is both semantically and especially phonetically and formally (πνῑγ- from *pn_ezg- [with reduced vowel]??; but fnaskazzen to OWNo. fnasa) quite unsatisfactory. -- The short in πνῐγ-ῆναι etc. can be analogal. -- So no etym.; is the word Pre-Greek?

εἰδωλόθυτος, ον (s. εἴδωλον and θύω; 4 Macc 5:2), only subst. τὸ εἰδωλόθυτον, someth. offered to a cultic image/idol, food sacrificed to idols an expr. which (s. εἴδωλον 2) was possible only within Israelite tradition (cp. Ps.-Phoc. 31 [an interpolation prob. based on Ac 15:29]; Just., D. 34, 8; 35, 1), where it was used in a derogatory sense. Polytheists said ἱερόθυτον (s. ἱερόθυτος). It refers to sacrificial meat, part of which was burned on the altar as the deities’ portion (cp. Orig., C. Cels. 8, 30, 1: τό εἰδωλόθυτον θύεται δαιμονίοις), part was eaten at a solemn meal in the temple, and part was sold in the market (so Artem. 5, 2) for home use. ③ immorality of a transcendent nature, fornication, in imagery, of polytheistic cult in the mystic city Babylon, which appears in Rv as a prostitute with an international clientele. Fr. the time of Hosea the relationship betw. God and his people was regarded as a marriage bond. This usage was more easily understandable because some Semitic and Graeco-Roman cults were at times connected w. sexual debauchery (cp. Hos 6:10; Jer 3:2, 9; 4 Km 9:22; on the positive side, for concern about propriety on the part of some cults s. e.g. SIG 820 [83/84 A.D.], in which an Ephesian official assures Rome that the annual autumn fertility festival is conducted ‘with much chastity and due observance of established customs’. This level of conduct prob. stands up well against activities associated with celebration of a modern Mardi Gras.)
