1 μακέλη
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `mattock' (Hes. Op. 470, Theok., A. R.), as destroying instrument of Zeus (A., S., Ar.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: On the formation cf. ἀγέλη, θύελλα a.o. The similarity with δίκελλα (s. v.) cannot be a coincidence, "but a convincing explanation has not yet been found." (Frisk). Güntert Reimwortbildungen 122 f. assumed a cross of δίκελλα and a form *ματέλη correponding to Lat. mateola `instrument for cutting in the earth'. A remarkable similarity shows Arm. markeɫ `mattock'; loan from a common source (Vogt NTS 9, 334)? To be rejected Scheftelowitz ZII 6, 111 (to Lith. makãras `great stave', Arm. mač `plough-tail' [Ir. LW [loanword]]). - With μάκελλα, - έλη may belong also μάσκη δίκελλα, βάσκα μακέλη and μάκκορ (Lacon. for μάσκος) ἐργαλεῖον γεωργικόν, ὡς δίκελλα H.; s. Bechtel Lex. s. μάκελλα. Diff. on μάσκη Specht KZ 66, 220 n. 5: from *μάτ-κη to Lat. mateola etc. - Cf. Bq s. v. - We saw s.v. δίκελλα that these are Pre-Greek words in -aly-; s. Beekes, FS Kortlandt. On κ\/σκ cf. Fur. 295-301.Page in Frisk: 2,163-164Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μακέλη

14 δίκελλᾰ
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: a two-pronged fork (trag., Delos IIIa).Derivatives: δικελλίτης (Luc.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Technical term without explanation. The connection with μάκελλα, μακέλη (Il.) favours an analysis as δί- and μά-κελλα, which is possible only for δί-κελλα: it would be a ι̯α-derivation from *δί-κελος or the like, "with two tooths"; but κελεΐς, κελεός does not fit, nor does σκάλλω; but a corresponding derivation of μα- (IE * sem-) is impossible. Note that the variation - ελλα\/- ελη is un-Greek = Pre-Greek. - "Die Anknüpfung an δικεῖν (Bechtel Lex., Chantr. Form. 99), wobei von einer λ-Ableitung *δικ-ελος auszugehen wäre, hat in der Bedeutung von δίκελλα (eig. *`Worfel, Schippe'?) keinen genügenden Anhalt." The word is, then, probably Pre-Greek (I assume -alya).Page in Frisk: 1,392-393Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > δίκελλᾰ

16 μίσχος
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: 1. `stalk of a leaf, fruit or flower' (Thphr., Porph.), also 2. name of a Thessalisan apparatus for field work, " ἰσχυρότερον ἔτι τῆς δικέλλης,... ὅ μᾶλλον εἰς βάθος κατιὸν πλείω γῆν περιτρέπει καὶ κατωτέρωθεν" (Thphr.). Acc. to H. = ὁ παρὰ τῳ̃ φύλλῳ κόκκος, what can hardly be correct. As difficult is μίσκος = `pod, shell' (Poll. 6, 94). Extensively on μίσχος Strömberg Theophrastea 115f. Orig. agricultural term, by the botanic Theophrastos used for botany(?).Compounds: Compp., e.g. ἄ-μισχος `withou stalk' (Thphr.).Origin: 1. PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]; 2. PGX [probably a word of Pre-Greek origin] [probably a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: No etymology; the connection with μίσκαιος κῆπος H., which is further connected with Lith. mìškas `wood, forest', also `wood for burning or building' (Specht Ursprung 255 n. 2, Fraenkel Wb. s.v.), is semantically void, unless one accepts for the Lith. word a basic meaning `treetrunk, bar'. After Bechtel Dial. 1, 208 first from *μιχ-σκ-ος like μάσκη from *μάκ-σκη (s. μακέλη); "but μιχ- can nowhere be placed". Fur. 133 connects μίσχος and μίσκος, which means that the word is Pre-Greek. -- Fur. 133 does not want to connect the stalk and the Thessal. apparatus. On the other hand he may be right in connecting the latter with μίσκαιος, where σχ\/σκ rather points to Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 2,245Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μίσχος
