Grammatical information: v.Other forms: ( ἐ)κέκαστο, κεκαδμένος (Pi. O. 1, 27)Derivatives: κάδμος δόρυ, λόφος, ἀσπίς. Κρῆτες H. (i. e. "equipment?"; c. Bechtel Dial. 2, 787). On PN Κάδμος s.v.; Κάστωρ s. v.; Καστι-άνειρα (Θ 305).Origin: IE [Indo-European]X [probably] [516] *ḱend- [not ḱad-] `excel'Etymology: A synonymous perf. act. in Skt. in śāśadúḥ, ptc. śā́śadāna- `excel'. Quite uncertain is connection with MIr. cā(i)d `holy', Gaul. caddos `sanctus'; not here Lat. Camēnae, s. W.-Hofmann s. v. - To κέκασμαι a present καίνυμαι was created analogically, s. v. - The root could be καδ- \< *ḱend- in the Sanskrit form (García Ramón, Mykenaïka, BCH Suppl. 25 (1992) 239-255; or it was κασ- \< *km̥s-, Heubeck BNF 8 (1957) 274-277. (The gloss on κάδμος seems quite unreliable. The proper names are also quite unclear.)Page in Frisk: 1,811-812Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κέκασμαι

10 Κάδμος
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: name of a hero, the founder of Thebes (Od.)Other forms: \/ Κασσμος (vase Rhegium).Derivatives: Καδμεῖος, Καδμήιος (Hes.) adj.; Καδμεία `the hill of Thebes' (X.); Καδμειῶνες `the inhabitants of Thebes' (Il.); καδμεία (γῆ) `cadmia, calamine' (Dsc.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: The connection with κέκασμαι is certainly wrong. The name is found for a river in Thesprotia and for a mountain and a river in Caria So the word is without a doubt a Pre-Greek word, of unknown meaning (Beekes, Mnemosyne 42 (2004)465ff. and Kadmos, 43(2005)172f. This is confirmed by the name Καδμἶλος which has a suffix - ιλ- which is well known in Anatolia. The structure of the name agrees with that of Πάτμος, Λάτμος, Λάκμος. The gloss κάδμος δόρυ, λόφος, ἀσπίς H. finds no support. Cf. on Καδμῖλος.Page in Frisk: 1,751Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > Κάδμος

Myc. kesadoro \/ Kessandros\/, kesadara \/ Kessandra\/.Dialectal forms:.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Etymolog. unexplained; hypotheses by Schulze Kl. Schr. 698, Hoffmann Glotta 28, 52, Sturtevant ClassPhil. 21, 248f., J. Davreux La légende de la prophétesse Cassandre (Paris 1942) 90ff., Carnoy Les ét. class. 22, 344. Heubeck, Beitr. Namenforschung 8 (1957) 272-274 from a root κασ- in κέκασμαι. Chantr. suggests to connect the PN kesameno and the root of κεδνός, κόσμος. Rather Pre-Greek where α \/ ε is frequent. Cf. XVI [to Lat. censeō]); the correctness of the etym. cannot be established. The PN would mean `who distinguishes himself'.
