André, Lex. s.v. pedicularia herba.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Formation like κεδρίς, κεφαλίς and other parts or products of plants. The stem recalls σταφυλή `grapes'. A typical substr. word, with prothesis and variation α\/ο (though the form without initial vowel may be a late loss).Page in Frisk: 1,169-170Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἀσταφίς

12 δάφνη
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `laurel' (Od.).Other forms: Variants: λάφνη δάφνη. Περγαῖοι H. and δαύχνα (Thess., Cypr.) with Δαυχναῖος (Aetol.); also δαυχμός (Nic., H.; s. δαῦκος).Derivatives: δαφνίς `laurel' (Hp.; cf. κεδρίς and Chantr. Form. 343), δαφνών `laurel wood' (Str.), δαφνῖτις `Kassia of laurek etc.' (Dsc.; Redard Les noms grecs en - της 70f.), - ίτης ( οἶνος, Gp.), surname of Apollon in Syracuse (H., EM). Adject.: δαφνώδης `laurel-like' (E.), δάφνινος `from laurel' (Thphr.), δαφνιακός (AP), δαφνήεις `rich in laurels' (Nonn.), δαφναῖος `belonging to the laurel' (Nonn.), also surname of Apollon (AP, Nonn.), Δαφναία surname of Artemis in Sparta (Paus.), also Δαφνία (Olympia, Str.). - Δάφνις m. PN, Δαφνοῦς ON.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Like the cognate Lat. laurus is δάφνη a Mediterranean word. "Die wechselnden Formen sind teils als Varianten der gebenden Sprache, teils als wechselnde Wiedergabe bei der Entlehnung verständlich." Frisk (which is true of most variants of Pre-Greek words), who continues "Solmsen Wortforschung 118 n. 1 und Bechtel Dial. 1, 205, Gött. Nachr. 1919, 343f. wollen δαύχνα, δαυχμός von δάφνη trennen und zu δαῦκος (s. d.) mit weiterem Anschluß an δαίω `anzünden' ziehen; kaum überzeugend." Several IE etymologies in W.-Hofmann s. laurus. - The word is typical for Pre-Greek, showing several variations. They can be explained by assuming * dakʷ-(n)-, which gave δαφ-ν- or δαυκ\/ χ-(ν\/μ)-; note that there is no *λαυφ-; cf. Beekes, Pre-Greek (B 1). Thus δαφν- and δαυκ\/ χ-ν\/μ- were one word.Page in Frisk: 1,353Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > δάφνη

13 κάρδαμον
Grammatical information: n.Meaning: `nose-smart', `Lepidium sativum' (X., Ar.).Other forms: Also παρδαμάλη (Phot.).Compounds: As 1. member in καρδάμωμον, haplological for καρδαμ-άμωμον n. `cardamum' (Thphr., Dsc.; on the formation Schwyzer 263).Derivatives: καρδαμίς = κάρδαμον (Nic., Plu.; after κεδρίς a. o., Chantraine Formation 343); καρδαμίνη `id.', also = σισύμβριον a. o. (Dsc.; Chantraine 204); καρδαμάλη `Persian cake from κάρδαμον' (Trypho ap. Ath.; as ἀμυγδάλη a. o.); καρδαμίζω "talk cress", i. e. `talk nonsense' (Nic. Th. 617). - Sideform καρδάνη `id.' (Gloss.; after βοτάνη?).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Among the plant names in - αμον (Schwyzer 494, Chantraine 133) there are several clear loan-words, so will be κάρδαμον. Doubtful suggestion in Strömberg Wortstudien 38: from *κάρδος = κράδος `twig' in καρδίδιον, ἀνα-, κατακάρδιον. Not better Grošelj Razprave 2, 41: to σκόροδον. - Skt. kardamaḥ is a further unknown plant, so connection with κάρδαμον remains uncertain\/improbable; cf. Mayrhofer KEWA s. v. - - αμον is a Pre-Greek suffix, Fur. 64 n. 269. The word has been connected with Hitt. karšani `an alcalic plant', Fur. 252.Page in Frisk: 1,786-787Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κάρδαμον

Strömberg Pflanzennamen 35). -Derivatives: κεδρίς f. `juniper-berry' (Hp., Ar.); κέδρον n. `id.' (inscr., EM, H.); κεδρία `cedar-oil' (Hdt., D. S.), also κεδρέα (pap., medic.; after μηλέα, συκέα etc.). κεδρίτης ( οἶνος) `wine with juniper-aroma' (cf. (Nic.; metr. reshaping), κεδρωτός `made of cedar-wood' (E. in lyr.), Κεδρεᾶτις, - ιδος f. name of Artemis in Orchomenos in Arcadia (Paus. 8, 13, 2; after Τεγεᾶτις a. o.). κέδρωστις, - εως f. `bryony' (Dsc. 4, 182; after ἄγρωστις, s. v.). Denominative verb κεδρόω `lay in cedar-resin, embalm' (Posidon., Str.).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Unknown. The similarity with the Baltic names of the juniper, e. g. Lith. kadagỹs (Schrader-Nehring Reallex. 2, 612, Lidén IF 18, 491), is limited to the first syllable (IE interpretation by H. Petersson Heteroklisie 104f., Specht Ursprung 147); the further connection with Russ. čad `vapour', OCS kaditi `smoke' (IE. * kēd-: * kōd-; Schrader-Nehring l. c.) is also quite hypothetical. Endzelin in Mühlenbach-E.: to Latv. cedrin̥š `heath'. Lat. LW [loanword] cedrus. - Acc. to Fohalle Mélanges Vendryes 157ff. a Mediterranean word for `cedar', Lat. citrus `Thuia articulata' and Gr. κέδρος would have been adapted to each other (?). - Further Schrader-Nehring l. c., Fraenkel Lit. et.
