6 πλάτανος
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `plane' (Ar., Pl., Thphr.).Derivatives: - ών, - ῶνος m. `plane grove' (Dsc.), - ιον n. `kind of apple, like the plane's fruit' (Diph. Siph.). Besides, earlier attested, πλατάνιστος f. `id.' (Β 307 a. 310, Hdt., Theoc.) with - ιστοῦς, - οῦντος m. `plane grove' (Thgn.), Lacon. - ιστάς (- ιστᾶς?), dat. -ιστᾳ̃ `id.' (Paus.), - ίστινος attribute of an appel (Gal.). Lat. platanista m. name of a great dolphin in the Ganges (Plin.); cf. Thompson Fishes s. πλατανιστής.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: As the oldest attested form πλατάνιστος is unclear in formation (to be rejected Osthoff Etym. parerga 1, 194 ff.; not prob. Niedermann Glotta 19, 10 ff.; cf. still Chantraine Form. 302 and above om ἄκαστος), we must onsider that the name of this asiatic and southeasteuropean tree is a loan and only later associated with πλατύς a. cogn. (as "broadbranched, -leaved, etc." or even "plattrindig" (flat-barked?_)? Schrader-Nehring Reallex. 2, 194, Strömberg Pflanzennamen 39, WP. 2, 99); cf. Chantraine Form. 199 f. The shorter form πλάτανος may have been shaped after λίβανος (: λιβανωτός).Page in Frisk: 2,552-553Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πλάτανος

11 θέμις
Grammatical information: f. (n.)Meaning: `justice, law, custom', also personied as goddess of justice (Il.).Other forms: Diff. oblique forms: gen. θέμιστος (β 68; Thess. inscr.), dat. - ιστι (Ο 87; Thess. inscr.), acc. - ιστα (Ε 761, Υ 4); θέμιδος (A. Pr. 18), θέμιτος (Pi. O. 13, 8); rarely also θέμιος (Hdt. 2, 50; v. l. - ιδος), θέμεως (inscr. Metropolis); acc. θέμιν (Hes.), voc. Θέμι (Ο 93). Plur. θέμιστες, acc. - ιστας etc. `statutes, (divine) laws, oracles' (Hom., Hes., Thgn., Pi.).Compounds: As 1. member e. g. in θεμι-σκόπος `preserving justice' (Pi.), θεμισ-κρέων `ruling through justice' (Pi.), θεμιστο-πόλος `supporting the laws, obeying the oracles' (h. Cer. 103, inscr. Delphi IIIa);. As 2. member e. g. in ἄ-θεμις `lawless, unlawful' (Pi., E.), ἀ-θέμιτος `id.' (Hdt.), ἀ-θέμιστος `id.' (Il.), also ἀ-θεμίστιος (Od.; metr. by-form).Derivatives: θεμιστός (A. Th. 694 [lyr.]; after ἀ-θέμιστος); θεμιτός in οὑ θεμιτόν = οὑ θέμις (IA); Θεμίστιος surname of Zeus `Lord of the θέμιστες' (Plu.); also month name (Thessaly); θεμιστεῖος `regarding the θ.' (Pi.); θεμιστοσύναι = θέμιστες (Orph. H. 79, 6). Denomin. verbs: 1. θεμιστεύω `proclaim the θέμ., i. e. laws, oracles' (Od.) with θεμιστεία `giving oracles' (Str.). 2. θεμιτεύω `behave lawful' (E. Ba. 79 [lyr.]). 3. θεμιζέτω μαστιγούτω, νομοθετείτω. Κρῆτες H.; after Bechtel Dial. 2, 786 to be changed in θεμισσέτω (= Paus. Gr. Fr. 202); aor. ptc. θεμισσάμενος (Pi.). - Several PN, z. B. Θεμιστο-κλῆς (s. on θέμερος)Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: To θέμις seems to agree Av. dā-mi- f. `creation', also `creator' (m. a. f.); cf. the same diff. between θέ-σις, - θε-τος as opposed to - dā-ti-, dā-ta- `basis, justice, law' (= θέμις). A problem is formed by the remarkable plural-formations θέμι-στ-ες, θέμι-στ-ος etc.; the explanation by Schulze (also Fraenkel Glotta 4, 22ff.) as a compound θεμι- and στᾱ- `stand', gives almost unsurmountable difficulties ; s. Frisk Eranos 48, 1ff. The occasional neutral genus acc. to Fraenkel from synonymous expressions like δέον, καλόν, προσῆκον (possible, but rather inherited from the Pre-Greek origin). - On the meaning of θέμις H. Vos Themis. Diss. Univ. Rheno-Traj. 1956. - Ruijgh convinced me (pers. comm.) that the strange inflection points to a Pre-Greek word.Page in Frisk: 1,660-661Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > θέμις

12 σκάνδαλον
Grammatical information: n.Meaning: `trap', usu. (semitism) `temptation, scandal' (LXX, NT; PCair. Zen. 608, 7; IIIa [- άνων gen. pl.]).Derivatives: 1. σκανδαλ-ίζω `to tempt (to sin), to give offence, to annoy', - ίζομαι `to be tempted to sin, to take offence' (LXX, NT) with - ιστής m. des. of an acrobat, e.g. `trapeze-artist' ( SIG 847, 5; IIp; on the meaning below); 2. - όω `id.' (Aq.). Besides σκανδάλ-η f. `stick of a trap' (Alciphr. 3, 21, 1: κρεᾳδιον τῆς σκανδάλης ἀπαρτήσας; reading not quite certain), - ος ἐμποδισμός H. -- σκανδάλ-ηθρον n. (Ar. Ach. 687: σκανδάληθρ' ἱστὰς ἐπῶν), after sch. ad loc. `the crooked stick in the trap' ( τὸ ἐν παῖς παγίσι ἐπικαμπες ξύλον), after Poll. 7, 114 `that which is bound with the cord' (τὸ τῃ̃ σπαρτίνῃ προσηρτημένον as opposed to παττάλιον = τὸ ἱστάμενόν τε καὶ σχαζόμενον [ τῆς μυάγρας]; Poll. 10, 156 σκανδάληθρον is identified with παττάλιον.Origin: IE [Indo-European]X [probably] [not in Pok.], PGX [probably a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: As instrument noun σκάνδαλον indicated prob. a suspended or free hanging down (piece of) wood (cf. πέτευρον, ῥόπτρον), from where developed in concreto both `loosenings, instrument (Germ. Stellholz) in an animal-trap' as `acrobat-bar' (from where σκανδαλιστής). From this σκανδάλ-ηθρον (on the formation Chantraine Form. 373 f.), prob. prop. of the trap (Germ. "Stellholzgerät") itself (thus most prob. in Ar.), but in use identified with σκάνδαλον, which referred to the trap (cf. Swed. giller `Stellholz, and the trap with it'). -- Of old (Pott, Bopp; s. Curtius 166) as IE connected with Lat. scandō `mount', Skt. skándati `jump, hop, hurry', MIr. perf. se-scaind `he jumped'; orig. meaning so `apparatus going off' (Osthoff Etym. parerga 1, 355 f.)? -- WP. 2, 540f., W.-Hofmann s. scandō; on σκάνδαλον further Bauer Gr.-dt. Wb. s. v. w. lit. (esp. G. Stählin Skandalon, Gütersloh 1930). -- The forms adduced seem to point to an IE word (* skend-, skond-), but the a-vocalism rather points to a Pre-Greek word; as does the meaning (technical instr., used by acrobats; cf. on κυβιστάω).Page in Frisk: 2,717-718Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σκάνδαλον
