29 ἀνθρηδών
ἀνθρηδών, - όνοςGrammatical information: f.Meaning: `hornet' (D. S.)Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: No doubt a substatum word. Beside ἀνθρηδών, ἀνθρήνη we find τενθρηδών f. (Arist.), τενθρήνη (Nik.); τενθρήνιον (Arist.). There are several forms which lack the first nasal: τεθρηνιώδης (Hp.), ἀθρήνη (Suidas etc.) and without red. or ἀ-, θρήνη, (Eust.), θρηνώδης (Democr. ap. Ael.); Winter Proth. Vok. 45. Cf. further θρῶναξ κηφήν. Λάκωνες H. (I know of no other cases with η\/ω). Note also πεμφρηδών f. `a wasp' (Nic.). So we have a root θρη\/ ων- with prothetic vowel or reduplication (cf. κεκρύφαλος, Σίσυφος) and prenasalization; Kuiper FS Kretschmer 221f. For ν\/δ cf. perhaps φληναφάω - φληδῶντα. Πεμφρηδών may show that the word had a labio-velar (Beekes Glotta 73, 1995\/6, 12f.). - There is no ground to assume that τενθρήνη, τενθρηδών are dissimilated from *τερθρ-. Relation with ἀθήρ, ἀνθέριξ is therefore improbable. Not to θρέομαι, θόρυβος. - τεθρηδών πρωρεύς H. rather a joking formation of the sailors' language after the animal names in - ηδών (Chantr. Form. 360f.). A difficult problem is the relation to Germanic and Balto-Slavic words: OS dren, drāno (Germ. Drohne), Lith. trãnas; s. Kuiper l.c. 222.Page in Frisk: 1,110Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἀνθρηδών

30 ἀσύφηλος
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: uncertain, `headstrong?, insulting?' or `foolish'? (Il.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: The schol. on Ven. A and Bechtel Lex. connect σοφός (but the ἀ- would be privative, with a non-Greek adj.?). One compared Σίσυφος, σέσυφος πανοῦργος H. Fur. 337 further compares αἰσύφιος δεινός, ψευδης, ἀπατεών H. (- ος Kyr.), which seems to fit well. So prob. a substr. word.Page in Frisk: 1,174Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἀσύφηλος

Grammatical information: Adv.Meaning: `surely, certainly, definitely', esp. with οῖ᾽δα, also w. other verbs of ḳnowing and saying (Il.).Derivatives: Besides σαφής adj. `sure, definite, apparent, clear, evident' (Pi., A.; σαφές h. Merc.; s. bel.) with adv. σαφέως, σαφῶς `id.' (h. Cer.). Expressive enlargement σαφ-ηνής, Dor. -ᾱνής, adv. - ηνέως (Pi., trag.; adv. also Hdt.), after ἀπ-, προσ-ηνής a. o. (to be rejected Prellwitz Glotta 19, 95ff.), with σαφήν-εια f. `clarity, clearness' (Att. since A., Alcmaion; opposite ἀσάφεια from ἀ-σαφής), - ίζω `to make clear, to explain' (IA.) with - ισμός, - ιστικός (late). -- Quite doubtful σαφήτωρ μάντις ἀληθής, μηνυτής, ἑρμηνευτής H., as if from *σαφέω ( διασαφέω since E.); certainly only arisen from a v. l. Ι 404 (for ἀφήτωρ).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]; PGX [probably a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Of the above words the earliest attested adv. σάφα (on the formation Schwyzer 622) seems to be the oldest; from this σαφέως (as τάχα: ταχέως), the ntr. σαφές ( σαφες δ' οὑκ οῖ᾽δα h. Merc. 208) with σαφέστερον, and to this at last σαφής (Leumann Hom. Wörter 112 n. 77). -- Unexplained. Often analysed as in σα-φής with the 2. member of φάος, φαίνω; before this σα- as strengthening element, and this either with Prellwitz BB 22, 81 ff. to σάος (* tuh₂-; s. σῶς and τύλη) or with Brugmann IF 39, 114ff. to τίς (* kʷih₂-); prop. exclamation; cf. Σίσυφος and σοφός. Against this after Grošelj Živa Ant. 1, 127 to Ion. σάω `sieve' (s. διαττάω and σήθω), so prop. *'sieved'; - φα as in μέσφα. Older proposals in Bq and W.-Hofmann s. faber, sapiō and tabula. -- Estensively on σάφα Luther "Wahrheit" u. "Lüge" 61 ff.; s. also Frisk GHÅ 41 (1935): 3, 20 (Kl. Schr. [Göteborg 1966] 18). -- Furnée suggests several connections, which are not evident (index s.v.); he concludes to Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 2,684Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σάφα

32 σῑγαλόεις
σῑγαλόειςGrammatical information: adj.Meaning: ep. adjunct of ἡνία, χιτών, εἵματα, θρόνος a. o., approx. `brilliant, gleaming' (Hom.), later of ἀμύγδαλα, μνία (Hermipp., Numen. ap. Ath.).Derivatives: Besides νεο-σίγαλος `with a new brilliance' ( τρόπος; Pi.), which may have been built to σιγαλόεις after the pattern of παιπαλόεις: πολυ-παίπαλος a. o. (Leumann Hom. Wörter 214 n. 8). Denom. verb σιγαλόω `to smoothen, to polish' (Apollon. Lex. s. σιγαλόεντα, sch. Pi.); σιγάλωμα n. `polishing tools of a cobbler' (Apollon. ibd., H. s. σιγαλόεν), also `border, edging of a pelt' (H.: τὰ περιαπτόμενα ταῖς ᾤαις); beside it with loss of the γ (Schwyzer 209) σιάλωμα `iron mountings of a roman longshield' (Plb. 6, 23, 4; H.). The ep. adj. resembles the also epic αἰθαλόεις, ὀμφαλόεις a. o. The technical expression σιγάλωμα, which belongs stilistically to a quite diff. category and as opposed to νεο-σίγαλος cannot be explained from σιγαλόεις, can be derived from σιγαλόω (if this is not a construction of grammarians) but also be an enlargement of a subst. *σίγαλος (cf. e.g. ἀέτωμα to ἀετός).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: The ep. adj. resembles the also epic αἰθαλόεις, ὀμφαλόεις a. *σίγαλος (cf. e.g. ἀέτωμα to ἀετός). -- Etymolog. unclear. After Brugmann IF 39, 143 f. to γελεῖν λάμπειν a. cogn. (s. γαλήνη) with enforcing σῐ- (s. Σίσυφος; σῑ- metr. lengthening); a diff. supposition on σι- in Hofmann Et. Wb. s. v. Diff. Bechtel Lex. s. v.; by Brugmann l. c. rightly rejected. Older attempts in Bq.
