124 μή
6, 330 Od. 16, 168, wofür auch inf. praes. steht, μὴ σύγ' ἄνευϑεν ἐμεῖο λιλαίεσϑαι πολεμίζειν, Il. 16, 89, vgl. 839; Hes. O. 354. 356; μὴ κρύπτε, Pind. Ol. 7, 92 u. oft; μὴ πόνει μάτην, Aesch. Prom. 44; μὴ λέγε τάδε, Soph. Phil. 898; auch μὴ παρέστατε, der Präsensbdtg wegen, Ai. 1161; τάδε μὴ ποίει, Plat. Prot. 325 d; Folgende überall. Während dieser imperat. praes. mit μή eigentl. das Unterlassen dessen gebietet, was Einer schon thut, also ein Verbot einer fortdauernden Handlung enthält, geht der conj. aor. mehr auf ein Verbot dessen, was Einer thun will, oder drückt das Verbot einer momentanen Handlung aus, wie z. B. Od. 16, 168 Athene zum Odysseus, der sich schon lange vor seinem Sohne verstellt hat, sagt ἤδη νῦν σῷ παιδὶ ἔπος φάο μηδ' ἐπίκευϑε, eigtl. höre jetzt auf, dich zu verbergen, 15, 263, aber Theoklymenus den Telemach beschwört, den er eben beim Opfer trifft, εἰπέ μοι εἰρομένῳ νημερτέα μηδ' ἐπικεύσῃς, verhehle mir nicht; so öfter neben einem imper. aor., wie Soph. 955; doch dürfte sich der Unterschied bes. im Verlauf der Sprache nicht überall scharf herausstellen; σὺ δὲ μή τι χολωϑῇς, Il. 9, 33; μή τοί με κρύψῃς τοῦτο, Aesch. Prom. Phil. 468, öfter, der auch vrbdt καὶ μὴ βράδυνε μηδ' ἐπιμνησϑῇς ἔτι Τροίας, 1386, wie Her. 1, 155, σὺ μέντοι μὴ πάντα ϑυμῷ χρέω, μηδὲ πόλιν ἀρχαίην ἐξαναστήσῃς, wo das Erstere auf eine dauernde Gemüthsstimmung, das Letztere auf ein einzelnes Factum geht; μὴ φϑονήσῃς, Plat. Prot. 320 c; Folgde; auch in Nebensätzen, ὥςτε μὴ λίαν στένε Soph. El. 1175, ὥςτε μὴ ϑαυμάσῃς Plat. Phaedr. 238 d; vgl. Dem. 21, 211, wo verbunden ist μὴ κατὰ τοὺς νόμους δικάσητε, μὴ βοηϑήσητε τῷ πεπονϑότι δεινά, μὴ εὐορκεῖτε, richtet nicht nach den Gesetzen in diesem Falle, seid eurem Eide nicht treu, denn das εὐορκεῖν ist die dauernde Eigenschaft des guten Richters, die in jedem einzelnen Falle zur Anwendung kommt. – Selten auch beim indic. fut. in derselben Bedeutung, οὐκοῦν ἅπασι δῆτα γενναίως ἐρεῖς, καὶ μὴ παραλείψεις μηδένα, Ar. Eccl. 1145; vgl. Aesch. Conv. 213 e. – b) der imperat. aor., um lebhafter das augenblickliche Befolgen des Verbotes von Etwas, das der Andere thun will, einzuschärfen, ἄλλο δέ τοι ἐρέω, σὺ δὲ μὴ χόλον ἔνϑεο ϑυμῷ, Od. 24, 248, vgl. Il. 4, 410; μὴ ψεῦσον, ὦ Ζεῦ, Ar. Th. 870, was der Schol. als sophoklëisch bezeichnet; Aesch. Crit. 45 b. ἐμβάλλετε, Soph. Ant. 573, wie wir auch kurz sagen: keinen Verzug weiter; ἀλλὰ μή μοι πρόφασιν, Ar. Ach. 326, keine Ausflüchte; auch μὴ δῆτα τοῦτό γε, nur das nicht, Soph. Phil. 752, u. Prot. 318 b; μή μοι, 331 c; μή μοι μυρίους μηδὲ διςμυρίους ξένους, Dem. 4, 19, wo man λέγε ergänzen kann; vgl. ἄπελϑε νῦν μοι, worauf erwidert wird μή· ἀλλά μοι δός, nicht doch! mit nichten! Ar. Ach. 434; Eur. Ion 1225. – 2) Aufforderung Etwas nicht zu thun; – a) bei der ersten Person plur. conj., als hortativus, wo ebenfalls nie οὐ steht, sowohl bei praes., als bei aor. mit ähnlichem Unterschiede, wie der unter 1) bemerkte; μὴ ἴομεν, ep. für ἴωμεν, laßt uns nicht gehen, Il. 12, 216 Od. 24, 462; μή οἱ χρήματ' ἔδωμεν, laßt uns ihm sein Vermögen nicht aufzehren, 16, 389; μὴ δοκῶμεν οὐκ ἀντιτίσειν αὖϑις, Soph. Prot. 311 a; μὴ πρὸς ϑεῶν μαινώμεϑα, μηδὲ αἰσχρῶς ἀπολώμεϑα, laßt uns nicht rasend handeln, Xen. An. 7, 1, 29. – b) auch die erste Person >sing. u. plur. des conj. als dubitativus hat μή bei sich, πῶς λέγεις; μὴ ἀποκρίνωμαι ὧν προεῖπες μηδέν; soll ich etwa Nichts antworten? worin liegt »du verbietest mir also zu antworten«, Plat. Rep. I, 337 b; πότερον βίαν φῶμεν εἶναι ἢ μὴ φῶμεν; sollen wir sagen oder nicht? Xen. Mem. 1, 2, 45. – So auch elliptisch, ἄρχοντές εἰσιν, ὥςτ' ὑπεικτέον· τί μή; warum nicht? sc. ὑπείκωμεν, Soph. Ai. 653. Vgl. unten 10. Il. 16, 30 Od. 12, 106; ὃ μὴ γένοιτο, was nicht geschehen möge, Aesch. Legg. 19 c; ὑμῖν δὲ τοιοῦτο μὲν οὐδὲν οὔτ' ἦν, μήτε γένοιτο τοῦ λοιποῦ, es war nicht und möge auch in Zukunft nicht sein, Dem. 19, 149, vgl. 8, 51. 68. Vgl. noch δὸς μὴ Ὀδυσσῆα οἴκαδ' ἱκέσϑαι, Od. 9, 530, verleihe, daß er nicht zurückkommt. Soll die Unmöglichkeit der Erfüllung des Wunsches ausgedrückt werden, so steht der indic. des Nichtwirklichen, μὴ ὄφελες λίσσεσϑαι, Il. 9, 698; aber auch als Aussage betrachtet, πῶς οὐκ ὄφελον Τρώεσσι – κακὰ ῥάψαι, 18, 367; μή ποτ' ὤφελον λιπεῖν τὴν Σκῦρον, hätte ich doch niemals Skyrus verlassen, Soph. Phil. 957, vgl. Alc. 1054, hättest du sie doch nie gewonnen. – 4) Auch bei der Versicherung durch einen Schwur, daß Etwas nicht geschehen werde, liegt in der Seele des Schwörenden der Wunsch, daß es nicht eintrete, u. die Absicht es zu verhindern, daher μή, oft mit μήν oder μέν, mit dem int. aor., ἀλλ' ὄμοσον μὴ μητρὶ φίλῃ τάδε μυϑήσασϑαι, schwöre mir, daß du es nicht sagen willst, es nicht zu sagen, Od. 2, 373; ὄμνυϑι μὴ μὲν ἑκὼν τὸ ἐμὸν δόλῳ ἅρμα πεδῆσαι, Il. 23, 585, vgl. Ar. μὰ τὴν Ἀφροδίτην, – μὴ 'γώ σ' ἀφήσω, Eccl. 999; auffallender c. aor., μὰ γῆν –, μὴ 'γὼ νόημα κομψότερον ἤκουσά πω, Av. 195, wo die Betheuerung nur die subjective Ansicht hervorheben u. bekräftigen soll. – 5) Zum Ausdruck einer verneinten Absicht oder Verhütung steht immer μή, also – a) nach den Absichtspartikeln ἵνα, ὅπως, ὄφρα u. ä., Hom. u. Folgde überall, z. B. ὡς μὴ γένωμαι δμωΐς, Aesch. Suppl. 330, ὅπως μὴ πείσεταί τις, Ch. 263. Phil. 46, öfter; auch in der Frage, ἦ μὴ μίασμα τῶν φυτευσάντων λάβῃς; etwa damit du nicht befleckt werdest? Soph. Eccl. 495, wo darauf folgt χἡμῶν ἴσως κατείπῃ, s. auch unten 6). Phaed. Nubb. 493; Eccl. πάϑοι), μέγα δέ σφεας ἀποσφήλειε πόνοιο, Il. 5, 567, wo der conj. die als bestimmt angesehene Folge ausdrückt, der optat. die, welche möglicher Weise noch eintreten kann, womit man etwa Her. 1, 196 vergleiche, ἄλλο δέ τι ἐξευρήκασι γενέσϑαι, ἵνα μὴ ἀδικοῖεν αὐτὰς μηδ' ἐς ἑτέρην πόλιν ἄγωνται, u. Plat. Phaed. – Eben so werden die Verba sichhüten, sich vorsehen construirt, wo auch wir daß nicht sagen, τούτου φυλάσσου μή ποτ' ἀχϑεσϑῇ κέαρ, Aesch. Thuc. 7, 50. – Es folgt aber auch der indic., – a) futuri, der die sichere Ueberzeugung ausdrückt, daß das gefürchtete Uebel wirklich eintreten wird, φοβοῠμαι δὲ μή τινας ἡδονὰς ἡδοναῖς εὑρήσομεν ἐναντίας, Plat. Phil. V, 451 a, obgleich hier, wie bei Ar. Eccl. 486, περισκοπουμένη μὴ ξυμφορὰ γενήσεται τὸ πρᾶγμα, μή auch durch »ob nicht« übersetzt werden kann. Vgl. noch ὅρα μὴ δεήσει, Xen. Cyr. 4, 1, 18. Beide Constructionen vrbdt Aesch. – Aesch. 867, ἄκος δ' οὐδὲν ἐπήρκεσαν τὸ μὴ πόλιν μὲν ὥςπερ οὖν ἔχει παϑεῖν, Ag. 1144, welche Stellen man durch ein ausgelassenes ὥστε zu erklären pflegt, wo aber die verneinende Absicht ausgedrückt ist; χαλᾷς τὸ μή γ' ἕπεσϑαι, Eum. 211; ἐξομεῖ τὸ μὴ εἰδέναι, Soph. Phaed. Parm. 147 a Phil. 15 a; τὸ μὴ οὐχ ἡδέα εἶναι τὰ ἡδέα λόγος οὐδεὶς ἀμφισβητεῖ, Keiner zweifelt, daß etwa das Angenehme etwas nicht Angenehmes sei, eigtl.: u. meinet, daß das Angenehme nicht etwas nicht Angenehmes sei, Phil. 13 a; vgl. Soph. I, 354 b; Crit. 43 c (vgl. unter 8). – 7) In allen Conditionalsätzen steht μή, also – a) nach εἰ, ἐάν und den mit ἄν zusammengesetzten ἐπειδάν u. ä., wofür sich Beispiele von Hom. an überall finden (vgl. auch oben εἰ μή); λώβη τάδε γ' ἔσσεται – εἰ μή τις Δαναῶν νῦν Ἕκτορος ἀντίος εἶσιν, Il. 7, 97; ἐὰν μή τις τύχῃ ἰατρικὸς ὤν, Plat. Prot. 313 e. – Bezieht sich aber die Negation auf ein einzelnes Wort, das objectiv verneint wird, so tritt auch hier οὐ ein, wobei der Nachdruck auf nichtzu legen ist, εἰ δέ τοι οὐ δώσει ἑὸν ἄγγελον, wenn er ihn dir nicht geben wird, vorenthalten wird, Il. 24, 296; γιγνώσκεις τόδε, ὡς πᾶς τις αὑτὸν τῶν πέλας μᾶλλον φιλεῖ, εἰ τούςδε γ' εὐνῆς οὕνεκ' οὐ στέργει, Eur. Med. 87, wenn er diese nicht liebt, d. h. wenn er lieblos gegen sie ist, wo μισεῖ zu stark erscheinen würde; εἰ μὲν οὖν οὐ πολλοὶ ἦσαν, d. i. wenn es wenige wären, Lys. 13, 62; so bes. bei φημί u. ἐάω, ἐάν τε οὐ φῆτε, ἐάν τε φῆτε, mögt ihr es leugnen oder gestehen, Plat. Apol. 25 c; ἐὰν μὲν οὖν φάσκῃ Φρύνιχον ἀπ οκτεῖναι, καὶ τοῦτον τιμωρεῖσϑε· ἐὰν δ' οὐ φάσκῃ, ἔρεσϑε αὐτὸν, διότι φησὶν Ἀϑηναῖος ποιηϑῆναι· ἐὰν δὲ μὴ ἔχῃ ἀποδεῖξαι –, Lys. 13, 76, wo ἐὰν μὴ φάσκῃ nicht gesagt werden könnte, denn verhört muß der Angeklagte antworten, entweder eingestehen oder leugnen; in letzterm Falle aber kann man annehmen, daß er es nicht beweisen kann; εἰ δ' οὐκ ἠϑελήσαμεν, wenn wir uns weigerten, Thuc. 3, 55; οὐκ ἄρα ἔτι μαχεῖται, εἰ ἐκ ταύταις οὐ μαχεῖται ταῖς ἡμέραις, wenn er nicht kämpfen, d. i. den Kampf vermeiden wird, Xen. An. 1, 7, 18; u. natürlich da, wo ein solcher Satz mit εἰ nur eine andere Form für einen Aussagesatz ist, so nach ϑαυμάζω, δεινὸν ἂν εἴη, εἰ οὐ, wo wir geradezu mit daß übersetzen können, Her. 7, 9; Thuc. Prot. 318 b; u. so oft λέγειν ἃ μὴ δεῖ, was man nicht sagen sollte, Soph. Phil. An. 5, 7, 25, jeder welcher, oder wenn er nicht schwimmen konnte, ertrank; und nach ὅσος, ὅσοι μὴ εἰς τὴν ϑάλασσαν κατέφυγον, κατελεύσϑησαν, 5, 7, 2; ὅσον μὴ ἀνάγκη μετέχειν αὐτῶν, Plat. Phaed. 64 d 83 a, sofern nicht, außer, vgl. Xen. An. 5, 3, 1; dagegen bei vorausgehendem πάντες, wo ὅσοι einfach erklärend ist, οὐ steht Il. 2, 143. Daher ist auch Plat. An. 5, 6, 29; Thuc. 1, 102. 6, 64 u. A.; selten tritt hier ein anders begründetes μή ein, ἴσμεν μὴ ἂν ἧττον ὑμᾶς λυπηροὺς γενομένους τοῖς ξυμμάχοις, Thuc. 1, 76; u. Troad. 977. Trach. Hell. An. 4, 4, 15, was aufgelös't sein würde: ἃ ἂν μὴ ᾖ – ὅτι οὐκ ἔστι, wie es Plat. Charmid. Hell. 4, 7, 2, falls er nicht annehmen sollte; vgl. Thuc. Troad. 412; vgl. Dem. 18, 34. Daher bei gen. abs., die gewöhnlich eine einfache Zeitbestimmung ausdrücken, οὐ steht, aber Her. 9, 9 Ἀϑηναίων ἡμῖν ἐόντων μὴ ἀρϑμίων, μεγάλαι κλισιάδες ἀναπεπτέαται; vgl. Dem. 8, 15. Adjectiven alleinstehende μή zu fassen, δίκαια καὶ μὴ δίκαια, Aesch. Ch. 76, = ἃ ἂν μὴ δίκαια ᾖ, u. in sofern unterschieden von οὐ δίκαια = ἄδικα; εἰς τὸ μὴ τελεςφόρον, Ag. 972; ὅτῳ τὸ μὴ καλὸν ξύνεστι, Soph. Ant. 368, wie das Participium mit dem Artikel, δρᾶν τὰ μὴ προςεικότα, Phil. 891; δῆμον καὶ μὴ δῆμον, Plat. Legg. VI, 486 a. Vgl. οὐκ οἶδα· δεινὸν δ' ἐστὶν ἡ μὴ ἐμπειρία, wenn man unerfahren ist, Ar. Eccl. Euthyph. 6 e; Parmenid. 146 d, wo τὰ μὴ ἓν ὄντα dem ὅσα μὴ ἕν ἐστι entspricht; vgl. noch οἱ πελταστικοὶ ἢ οἱ μή, Prot. 350 a. – 8) Bei dem Infinitiv steht μή (s. oben 6), – a) zum Ausdruck einer Forderung nach κελεύω, δέομαι, βούλομαι, ἐϑέλω u. ä., wofür sich Beispiele überall finden. Eben so nach λέγω u. An. 2, 7, 4; προλέγουσιν ἅπασι μηδ' ὁτιοῦν ἐκείνω διδόναι, Dem. 8, 27, sie sagen Alle, man sollte Jenem Nichts geben; ein indirecter Aussagesatz aber wird immer mit οὐ construirt, welches natürlich auch immer bei ὅτι steht; Thuc. 2, 5 vrbdt daher λέγοντες, ὅτι οὔτε ὁσίως δράσειαν, – τά τε ἔξω ἔλεγον αὐτοῖς μὴ ἀδικεῖν, sie hätten nicht gottesfürchtig gehandelt und sie sollten nicht unrecht thun; so διανοοῦνται, οὐ τὴν ἐπιστήμην τοῦ ἀνϑρώπου ἄρχειν, sie meinen, Plat. Prot. 352 b; aber διενενόητο εἰς τὸ στρατόπεδον μηκέτι ἐλϑεῖν, er hatte vor, wollte nicht mehr kommen, Xen. An. 5, 7, 15. Spt. 412 ist von demselben gesagt φησὶν οὐδὲ τὴν Διὸς ἔριν σχεϑεῖν, als bestimmte Aussage gefaßt; vgl. Plat. Prot. 319 b; Xen. Mem. 3, 6, 38 Cyr. 2, 4, 23; Thuc. 3, 32. So hat οἴομαι, νομίζω gew. den inf. mit οὐ bei sich, wenn sie aber die Nebenbedeutung von besorgen, argwöhnen haben, auch μή, wie νομίσαντες μὴ ἂν ἔτι ἱκανοὶ γενέσϑαι κωλῦσαι τὸν τειχισμόν, Thuc. Hell. 3, 2, 27. Häufig πιστεύειν mit folgendem μή, Xen. Cyr. 1, 5, 13 An. 1, 9, 8; Andoc. 1, 2. Pers. Phil. Prot. 5, 14; Xen. u. Folgde. – c) ein mit dem Artikel verbundener, dadurch substantivisch gewordener Infinitiv wird immer durch μή negirt, πάντ' ἐκπορίζει πλὴν τὸ μὴ νοσεῖν ἐμέ, Soph. Phil. Prom. 627, vgl. Rep. IX, 590 c; so oft auch τοῦ μὴ λύειν ἕνεκα τὰς σπονδάς, Thuc. 1, 45 u. A.; auch ohne ἕνεκα, οἱ οἰνοχόοι ἐγχεάμενοι καταῤῥοφοῦσι, τοῦ δή, εἰ φάρμακα ἐγχέοιεν, μὴ λυσιτελεῖν αὐτοῖς, damit es ihnen nichts nütze, Xen. Gorg. 509 d; oft bei Dem. u. Sp. Gorg. 194 c, wie ἀλλὰ μὴ οὐχ οὕτως ἔχῃ, es dürfte sich wohl nicht so verhalten, Crat. 436 b. So steht es – a) in directen Fragen; ἦ μή πού τινα δυςμενέων φάσϑ' ἔμμεναι ἀνδρῶν, Od. 6, 200, ihr meint doch wohl nicht, das sei einer von den Feinden? Mem. 2, 6, 34; vgl. Plat. Crit. 44 d Parm. 163 c; bei den Attikern auch ohne eine andere Fragepartikel, μή πού τι προὔβης τῶνδε καὶ περαιτέρω; Aesch. Prom. 247, vgl. 961 Pers. Prot. 310 b, vgl. 332 c 351 c; μὴ οὖν ἐγὼ ληρῶ, Theaet. 163 a, öfter. Lach. Phaedr. 260 a. – Auch εἰπέτω, μή τι ἄλλο λέγει, er soll sagen, ob er etwa meint, Plat. Phaedr. An. 6, 1, 28. Men. 89 c, vgl. Prot. 312 a.
Hermann Vig. 796 u.
Ellendt lex. Soph. führt auf: μὴ ἐ wird μὴ', bes. häufig beim Augment, μὴ 'πόϑουν, μὴ 'δυνήϑημεν, Soph. Ai. 941. 1046; so auch μὴ 'κ u. μὴ 'ξ für μὴ ἐκ u. μὴ ἐξ; μὴ 'κλιπεῖν, 271; Phil. 465 El. 973; μή 'στι = μή ἐστι, El. 1250 u. öfter; μὴ 'πί, Phil. O. R. 13. 221; μὴ οὐχί, O. C. 361.
