Ϝρόδον (= Aeol. βρόδον) comes from the east, pob. first like Arm. vard `rose' from OIran. *u̯r̥da- ( \> NPers. gul `id.'); Schwyzer 344 n. 2 with Schulze (s.bel.). To this also Aram. wardā', Arab. ward `id.' Further history debated; after Mayrhofer Arch. Or. 18, 74 from Arab. warada `bloom', waruda `be red'; recalled by Mayrhofer Sprache 7(1961)185. Diff.
