27 -further o farther?-
Nota d'usoSia further che farther sono forme comparative di far e come aggettivo o avverbio in riferimento alle distanze fisiche si possono usare entrambi, nonostante further sia più comune nell'inglese britannico: There is another garage a mile or two further on, c'è un altro garage uno o due miglia più avanti; Aberdeen is farther north than Dundee, Aberdeen è più a nord di Dundee. In contesti figurati o astratti, però, si può utilizzare solo further, per esempio quando, come aggettivo, si intende “aggiuntivo, ulteriore”: further information, ulteriori informazioni, further details, ulteriori dettagli, further education, istruzione postscolastica; o come avverbio nel senso di “inoltre”: Further, the report describes the need for improved safety precautions, inoltre il report parla della necessità di migliori precauzione sanitarie; o quando si tratta del verbo to further, che significa “promuovere, potenziare”: to further children's welfare, potenziare i servizi sociali per i bambini. -
28 -presentarsi-
Nota d'usoIl verbo presentarsi “a rapporto” da un superiore o simili non si traduce con to present oneself ma con to report: Tutti i visitatori devono presentarsi alla reception, all visitators must report to the reception (non letteralmente all visitors must present themselves at the reception). In contesti informali, presentarsi (in un determinato luogo) si può tradurre con verbi come “to arrive”, “to turn up”, “to show up”: Si presentò con oltre un'ora di ritardo, he turned up over an hour late. -
29 -who o whom?-
Nota d'usoLa regola tradizionale è che who è un pronome soggetto, mentre whom è pronome complemento oggetto e indiretto: the woman who came to dinner last night, la donna che è venuta a cena ieri sera; He's a man whom people find they can talk to easily, è un uomo a cui la gente pensa si possa parlare con facilità. Però l'uso di who al posto di whom è molto diffuso nel parlato, soprattutto nelle domande, e in contesti non formali: Who are you looking for? chi stai cercando? Se whom è legato a una preposizione, anche se la frase è interrogativa, la regola tradizionale stabilisce che non ne deve essere separato, per evitare che la frase finisca con la preposizione: For whom was the report intended? a chi era destinata la relazione? Però si tratta di una regola molto controversa e contestata: la forma alternativa (Who was the report intended for?) è largamente accettata. -
