1 Dope
A name given to a varnish used for aeroplane wings. It is made by dissolving cellulose, or compounds, in solvents such as amyl alcohol, amyl acetate, etc. The chief function of the dope is to tighten the fabric, and give a smooth, taut, waterproof surface resistant to the weather, and also to oil and gasoline. It also adds to the strength of the fabric by at least 25 per cent in linen and 15 per cent in cotton. -
