  • 35 Guillaume, Charles-Edouard

    SUBJECT AREA: Horology, Metallurgy
    [br]
    b. 15 February 1861 Fleurier, Switzerland
    d. 13 June 1938 Sèvres, France
    [br]
Swiss physicist who developed two alloys, "invar" and "elinvar", used for the temperature compensation of clocks and watches.
    [br]
Guillaume came from a family of clock-and watchmakers. He was educated at the Gymnasium in Neuchâtel and at Zurich Polytechnic, from which he received his doctorate in 1883 for a thesis on electrolytic capacitors. In the same year he joined the International Bureau of Weights and Measures at Sèvres in France, where he was to spend the rest of his working life. He retired as Director in 1936. At the bureau he was involved in distributing the national standards of the metre to countries subscribing to the General Conference on Weights and Measures that had been held in 1889. This made him aware of the crucial effect of thermal expansion on the lengths of the standards and he was prompted to look for alternative materials that would be less costly than the platinum alloys which had been used. While studying nickel steels he made the surprising discovery that the thermal expansion of certain alloy compositions was less than that of the constituent metals. This led to the development of a steel containing about 36 per cent nickel that had a very low thermal coefficient of expansion. This alloy was subsequently named "invar", an abbreviation of invariable. It was well known that changes in temperature affected the timekeeping of clocks by altering the length of the pendulum, and various attempts had been made to overcome this defect, most notably the mercury-compensated pendulum of Graham and the gridiron pendulum of Harrison. However, an invar pendulum offered a simpler and more effective method of temperature compensation and was used almost exclusively for pendulum clocks of the highest precision.
Changes in temperature can also affect the timekeeping of watches and chronometers, but this is due mainly to changes in the elasticity or stiffness of the balance spring rather than to changes in the size of the balance itself. To compensate for this effect Guillaume developed another more complex nickel alloy, "elinvar" (elasticity invariable), whose elasticity remained almost constant with changes in temperature. This had two practical consequences: the construction of watches could be simplified (by using monometallic balances) and more accurate chronometers could be made.

    DOM-TOM [dɔmtɔm]
    plural masculine noun
( = départements et territoires d'outre-mer) French overseas departments and territories
    ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
    DOM-TOM, ROM and COM
There are four « Départements d'outre-mer »: Guadeloupe, Martinique, La Réunion and French Guyana (Guyane). They are run in the same way as metropolitan « départements » and their inhabitants are French citizens. In administrative terms they are also « Régions », and in this regard are also referred to as « ROM » (Régions d'outre-mer). The term « Dom-Tom » is still commonly used, but the term « Territoire d'outre-mer » has been superseded by that of « Collectivité d'outre-mer » (COM). The COM include Corsica, Mayotte, Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin; French Polynesia and New Caledonia were given the status of « Pays d'outre-mer » (POM) in 2009. They are independent, but each is supervised by a representative of the French government.

  • 39 Crælius, Per Anton

    [br]
    b. 2 November 1854 Stockholm, Sweden
    d. 7 August 1905 Stockholm, Sweden
    [br]
Swedish mining engineer, inventor of the core drilling technique for prospecting purposes.
    [br]
Having completed his studies at the Technological Institute in Stockholm and the Mining School at Falun, Crælius was awarded a grant by the Swedish Jernkontoret and in 1879 he travelled to Germany, France and Belgium in order to study technological aspects of the mining, iron and steel industries. In the same year he went to the United States, where he worked with an iron works in Colorado and a mining company in Nevada. In 1884, having returned to Sweden, he obtained an appointment in the Norberg mines; two years later, he took up employment at the Ängelsberg oilmill.
His mining experience had shown him the demand for a reliable, handy and cheap method of drilling, particularly for prospecting purposes. He had become acquainted with modern drilling methods in America, possibly including Albert Fauck's drilling jar. In 1886, Crælius designed his first small-diameter drill, which was assembled in one unit. Its rotating boring rod, smooth on the outside, was fixed inside a hollow mandrel which could be turned in any direction. This first drill was hand-driven, but the hydraulic version of it became the prototype for all near-surface prospecting drills in use worldwide in the late twentieth century.
Between 1890 and 1900 Crælius was managing director of the Morgårdshammar mechanical workshops, where he was able to continue the development of his drilling apparatus. He successfully applied diesel engines in the 1890s, and in 1895 he added diamond crowns to the drill. The commercial exploitation of the invention was carried out by Svenska Diamantbergborrings AB, of which Crælius was a director from its establishment in 1886.

  • 40 κίβδηλος

    Grammatical information: adj.
Meaning: `false, adulterated', of gold, coins etc., `fraudulent' (Thgn.); negated ἀ-κίβδηλος `unadalterated' (Hdt., Pl. Lg.; vgl. Frisk Adj. priv. 14f.).
Other forms: also Pi. Dith. 2, 3. Fur. 316 further quotes κίβαλος ὁ λῃστής Su. (but διάκονος H.)
Derivatives: κιβδηλία, - ίη `falsification, deceit' (Hp., Ar.) and denomin.: 1. κιβδηλεύω `falsify' (E., Ar., Arist.) with κιβδήλευμα, - λεία `falsification' (Pl. Lg.), 2. κιβδηλιάω `look like adulterated gold, have jaundice' (Arist.; after the verbs of illness in - ιάω). - Beside it κίβδης κακοῦργος, \<κά\> πηλος, χειροτέχνης H., κίβδωνες = μεταλλεῖς, `miners' (Poll., Moer.), κιβδῶνες (Phot.). - Basis κίβδος `dross of metal' (Poll.); in the same meaning also κίβδηλις H. s. κιβδηλιῶντας; on the suffix ηλο- Chantraine Formation 242, Schwyzer 484. - It remains uncertain whether κίβαλος belongs here; I see no basis to connect κίβον. - The word is of course Pre-Greek (Fur. 316). Clearly the root is κιβδ- (on the suffix - ηλο- Fur. 115 n. 5); this shows that - βδ- most probably is one phoneme; I propose it was (the voiced representative of) *py.
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]
Etymology: Term of miners without etymology (cf. on μέταλλον). Bq (with Solmsen) compares κίβον ἐνεόν. Πάφιοι H. which is also unexplained and recalls Fr. ( pierre) sourde i. e. `dull, without reflex'; Grošelj Živa Ant. 3, 200f. mentions NHG taub, Slov. gluh also `without metall' (of minerals). For - δος compare, λύγδος `white marble' (on now see s.v. μόλυβδος `lead'); s. Fraenkel Nom. ag. 2, 175 n. 1 (p. 176; partly diff.), Grošelj l. c. with a quite hypothetical etymology. Older wrong or doubtful explanations from IE and Semit. in Bq; s. also WP. 1, 349. - A related verb Blumenthal finds in κίψει κακοποιεῖ H. (?).
