Летучие органические соединения (различных типов) присутствуют в концентрациях достаточных, чтобы действовать синергетически (нарушать совместное функционирование органов) на многих присутствующих. Синдром «больных» зданий имеет место обычно тогда, когда концентрация летучих органических веществ достаточно высока. Этот синдром не вызывает обычных заболеваний и труден в определении специфических источников заболеваний - см. indoor air quality, volatile organic compounds (VOC).
