Ningun genero le fue indiferente, y firmo, casi en cada uno de ellos, obras consistentes. La etapa mas fructifera de la primera parte de su carrera fue la correspondiente a sus peliculas para RKO, en particular Hitler’s Children (1943) y las magnificas muestras de cine negro Historia de un detective (Murder, My Sweet, 1944), basada en una de las novelas de Raymond Chandler, y Encrucijada de odios (Crossfire, 1947), intenso drama de intolerancia racial, basado en una novela de Richard Brooks, que posteriormente seria director de cine. Lanza rota es un remake, en clave de western, de Odio entre hermanos (House of Strangers, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1949), con Spen cer Tracy en el lugar de Edward G. Robinson. No se suele incluir, y se aportan razones al respecto, a El arbol de la vida como perteneciente al genero.
