101 -calendar, calender o colander?-
Nota d'usoCalendar significa “calendario”, prevalentemente nel senso della tabella che riporta i giorni, le settimane e i mesi dell'anno: to put holiday dates on the calendar, segnare i giorni di vacanza sul calendario; the year's sporting calendar, il calendario sportivo dell'anno; a rent of 2000 pounds per calendar month, un affitto di 2000 sterline al mese. Nota d'usoI verbi to wash e to clean hanno un significato simile, ma vengono usati in contesti diversi. To wash significa “lavare” in senso generale, usando acqua e sapone (o detersivo), mentre to clean è più vicino all'italiano “pulire”, in quanto viene usato in riferimento a una macchia o alla sporcizia visibile, e può non includere l'utilizzo dell'acqua: Every morning I wash my face, ogni mattina mi lavo la faccia; Clean your mouth, you've got some crumbs around it, pulisciti la bocca, hai delle briciole. Fa eccezione l'espressione “lavarsi i denti”, in cui viene usato il verbo to clean oppure to brush: Remember to brush your teeth, ricorda di lavarti i denti. -

Nota d'usoTo wander significa genericamente “vagare senza meta”: to spend the afternoon wandering around the city, trascorrere il pomeriggio vagando nella città; to wander off into the woods for a walk, allontanarsi nei boschi per una passeggiata. Attenzione a non confondere to wander con to wonder, che si pronuncia in modo molto simile, ma significa principalmente “meravigliarsi” o “chiedersi”: I wonder how they're getting along in Australia, mi chiedo come se la passano in Australia; After seeing the play, you'll leave the theatre wondering again at the greatness of life, dopo aver visto la commedia, lascerai il teatro stupendoti nuovamente della grandezza della vita. -
