72 Band
The thin twisted cotton rope used to drive spindles of the spinning, doubling and winding machine. ———————— The collar which in the 17th century supplanted the ruff. It was first a stiff stand-up collar of cambric lawn or linen, starched, wired and sometimes edged with lace. Worn as late as 1656. Yellow starch was used as in the case of the ruff. Contemporary with the band stand-up was the falling band, also edged with lace, sometimes embroidered or made of Italian cut work ornamented with pearls. Falling bands are mentioned in 1604 and are sometimes called French Falls. The Cavaliers wore the broad type of band and the Roundheads a very narrow type. Geneva bands were used by the Protestant churchmen. The term, band-box, has descended from those early days, when similar boxes were used solely for keeping bands and ruffs in. ———————— Trade term in Bengal for the wild silk crop of any single month. -
