90 Brassiere Cloth
A fabric used for the corset trade, woven on dobby or jacquard looms, from super quality yarns and usually with stripes in the warp, from rayon or 2/40's mercerised cotton yarn. When rayon is used, the designs are such that no long floats are shown. A standard quality is 36-in. grey, 84 X 76 per inch, 22's weft, 28's cotton, 150 denier rayon (or 2/40's mercerised for 150 denier), piece-dyed in pink and other light colours. Another cloth shipped to U.S.A. is made 37-in., 92 X 68, 20's/20's super American yarns with rayon stripes and plain stripes alternating, 1/2-in. to 1-in. in width. -
91 Corded Alpaca
A fabric made with a cotton warp and alpaca weft. The cotton warp forms cords down the piece, and is covered by the weft which thus produces both face and back of the fabric. -
92 Delaine
A light, all-wool cloth of plain weave, usually printed either in the piece or warp printed. The illustration is typical of the type of design printed on wool delaines, four or more colours often being employed. The term is derived from " Mousseline delaine," which signifies " wool muslin." A good quality is made 54 ends and 64 picks per inch, 46's/64's botany, but up to 64 ends and 70 picks per inch, and from 40's to 70's yarn are used. The example illustrated is made with 56 ends and 50 picks per inch, 46's worsted warp, 64's worsted weft. Cotton delaines are now made as imitations, and a general term for the cotton cloth is "delainette". -
93 Dril
A Spanish term for men's suiting cloth, made in the plain or twill weave with cotton yams. The cloths are either piece-dyed or made with dyed yarns. It also describes cotton fabrics used for trouserings in Jamaica, plain weave in stripes, woven from all coloured yarns. -
94 Dugebia
A very fine cloth with cotton and silk in stripes or checks having two dents (8 ends) of cotton and two dents of silk throughout the cloth. A piece consists of 9 to 12 yards and is used for shirts, etc., for summer wear. The cloth has about 92 ends and 80 picks per inch. -
95 Frise
A ratine dress cloth made in France with slub yarns, plain weave and piece-dyed. All-cotton yarns. ———————— Very fine plain weave linen cloths made in Holland, which were well bleached and used for underclothing, etc. A French-made linen cloth, but much heavier, also had this name. This was plain weave and used for dress purposes. ———————— A looped pile fabric woven in France, and is a terry cloth, from Frise, the French word for terry, ruffled, curl pile. ———————— French for ruffled. 96 Grenada
A black dyed cotton warp with alpaca, mohair, or English lustre weft, used for dress purposes. The weave is a 5-end weft twill 3 down and 2 up, as shown at E (See Alpaca). A popular quality is made to finish 50-in. (56-in. grey) from 2/40's black cotton warp, 12's mohair weft, and woven in design. Set 76 ends and 52 picks per inch. Piece-dyed in all colours for dress purposes. (Cross-dyeing). -
97 Guzzy
A low quality cotton cloth, made 18-in. wide at Agra, on hand looms from local-grown cotton. A piece made 18-in. 171/2 yards weighs 29-oz. -
98 Hollands
The true hollands are made from flax yams. It originally was a very fine white linen used for shirts, but today this is not made. Brown Holland - 36-in. to 39-in., 48 ends and 48 picks per inch, loom state. White Holland - This is brown holland bleached and soft finished, and used for towels, linings, etc. Blind Hollands - 32-in. to 52-in. wide, coloured yarns, glazed finish, also in piece-dyed styles. All the above are made in numerous qualities, from flax yams about 32's lea warp and weft. The cotton imitations also vary greatly in quality, and the two cloths given are very fair standards, 40-in. to finish 37-in., 64 ends and 60 picks per inch, 28's T., 40's W., bleached and glazed. Width 32-in. to 48-in., 60 ends and 60 picks per inch, 28's T., 40's W., woven from dyed yarns in stripes and checks. Mostly used for window blinds and aprons, but many good qualities are made for dress purposes. A fabric is shipped to India as holland," which is all cotton, woven from white warp and blue and white grandrelle weft, about 26-in. to 30-in. wide, 52/56 reed, 44/52 picks, 20's warp, 2/36's weft. -
99 Indian Mull
Originally fine, closely woven cotton fabrics made in India, in plain weave, about 80 ends and 72 picks per inch, 90's warp, 100's weft. Usually piece-dyed, and used for dresses. Many qualities of plain weave cotton cloths now pass under this term. -
100 Mohair Beaver Plush
A pile fabric made with a cotton back and mohair pile. The pile is long and harsh to the touch. The cotton warp is yarn dyed, and the piece cross-dyed usually dark brown.
