11 ὥς
ὥς, adv. des demonstr. Pronomens, von dem alten demonstr. Pron. ὅς, = οὕτως, ὧδε, 1) auf diese Art, auf diese Weise, so, also; oft bei Hom. ἃς εἰπών, ἃς γὰρ ἄμεινον u. ä.; u. O. C. 1244; Eur. El. 155 Hipp. 1054, vgl. Valck. Phoen. 841; auch in der ion. Prosa, Her. 3, 13. 6, 76. – In der Verbindung καὶ ὥς und negativ οὐδ' ὥς, μηδ' ὥς betonten die Alten das Wort als Perispomenon, καὶ ὧς, οὐδ' ὧς, μηδ' ὧς, s. Lehrs Quaest. Ep. p. 63 Sengebusch Offener Brief an Rost S. 74; Imm. Bekker hat diese Betonung in den Hom. wieder eingeführt; καὶ ὥς, Bekker καὶ ὧς, auch so, auch unter diesen Umständen, gleichwohl, dennoch, wie ὅμως, Il. 1, 116. 3, 159. 4, 322. 8, 56. 11, 720 u. sonst; ο ὐ δ ' ὥς, Bekker οὐδ' ὧς, auch so nicht, auch unter diesen Umständen nicht, dennoch nicht, 7, 263. 9, 351. 587. 11, 841 Od. 1, 6. 2, 23 u. sonst; οὐδέ κεν ὥς Il. 9, 386. In diesen Vrbdgn auch in att. Prosa, Thuc. 1, 44, öfter, Xen. Cyr. 3, 3,11, Isocr. 4, 139, u. bei Sp., wie App. Hisp. 9, 16. – Ueber ἃς δ' αὔτως s. ä. oft Hom.; δοῦλον ὥς Aesch. Pers. selten in der ion. Prosa, u. wahrscheinlich ohne Beispiel in der att. Prosa. Vgl. Lehrs Quaest. Ep. p. 99.

Here the reconstruction of an old oxytonon may account for the unexpected absence of a laryngeal in the root, which can now be attributed to the Early Slavic loss of laryngeals in pretonic position. In view of Hirt's law, which would have generated root stress, a reconstruction with a zero grade (*glh1it-tó) is preferable. The semantically different Lith. glaĩstas probably contains a old neuter. -
