    ἁμαρτωλός, όν pert. to behavior or activity that does not measure up to standard moral or cultic expectations (being considered an outsider because of failure to conform to certain standards is a freq. semantic component. Persons engaged in certain occupations, e.g. herding and tanning, that jeopardized cultic purity, would be considered by some as ‘sinners’, a term tantamount to ‘outsider’.     Etymology: The relation of the words cited is not always clear. Clearly ἐχθραίνω and ἐχθρεύω are late derivations of ἐχθρός; much older ἐχθαίρω is also a denominative of ἐχθρός (Schwyzer 725). Also ἀπ-εχθάνομαι could with r:n-interchange be related to ἐχθρός (Benveniste Origines 16), though it could as well be a nasal enlargement of ἔχθομαι, ἀπ-εχθέσθαι (Schwyzer 700, Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 315f..). ἔχθομαι is acc. to Schwyzer 725 a backformation from ἐχθαίρω, but it is better connected to ἔχθος like σθένω to σθένος (Schwyzer 723). - More difficult is the interpretation of ἔχθος and ἐχθρός, for which cf. αἶσχος: αἰσχρός, κῦδος: κυδρός. If we start from ἐχθρός and consider ἔχθος with ἔχθομαι, ἐχθίων, ἔχθιστος as innovations, perhaps after κυδρός, κυδίων, κύδιστος, τὸ κῦδος, we can connect ἐχθρός with Lat. extrā `outside', exterus `being outside', and so also with ἐχθός = ἐκτός `outside' (Leumann Hom. Wörter 158 n. 1 with Keil Hermes 25, 601, s. also Pisani Ist. Lomb. 73: 2, 30; against this Wackernagel KZ 31, 41 = Kl. I p. 8, 20 τὸν κενωθέντα τόπον ἀ.; Pla., Tim. 79b ἀ. τὴν ἕδραν), and τόπος here means a place actually occupied by an ἰδιώτης in the meeting (a view not shared by most Eng. translators), but it is not necessary to assume that a section was reserved for catechumens (so GHeinrici; JWeiss).     a person who is relatively unskilled or inexperienced in some activity or field of knowledge, layperson, amateur in contrast to an expert or specialist of any kind (the uncrowned person in contrast to the king [Hdt. 2, 81; 7, 199; EpArist 288f; Philo, Decal. 40; Jos., Bell. 1, 665]; private soldier in contrast to an officer [Polyb. 1, 69, 11]; in contrast to a physician [Thu. 2, 48, 3; Philo, Conf. Lingu. 22], philosopher [Plut., Mor. 776e; Epict., index Sch.; Philo, Omn. Prob. Lib. 3; Just., A II, 10, 8], orator [Isocr. 4, 11; Lucian, Jupp. Trag. 27], the μάντις [Paus. 2, 13, 7], poet [Alexis Com. 269; Pla., Laws 890a], priest [OGI 90, 52; Philo, Spec.     one who is not knowledgeable about some particular group’s experience, one not in the know, outsider. In 1 Cor 14:23f ἰδιῶται and ἄπιστοι together form a contrast to the Christian congregation. The ἰ. are neither similar to the ἄπιστοι (against Ltzm., Hdb. ad loc.), nor are they full-fledged Christians, but stand betw. the two groups, prob. as prospects for membership and are therefore relatively outsiders (ἰδιώτης as a t.t. of religious life e.g. OGI 90, 52 [196 B.C.], SIG 1013, 6; mystery ins fr. Andania [92 B.C.]: SIG 736, 16–19 αἱ μὲν ἰδιώτιες … αἱ δὲ ἱεραί. In relig. associations the term is used for nonmembers who may participate in the sacrifices: FPoland, Gesch. des griech. Vereinswesens 1909, 247*; 422.—Cp. also Cratin. Iun. Com. [IV B.C.] Fgm. 7 vol. II 291 K. of the Pythagoreans: ἔθος ἐστὶν αὐτοῖς, ἂν τινʼ ἰδιώτην ποθὲν λάβωσιν εἰσελθόντα κτλ.). The closer relation which they, in contrast to the ἄπιστοι, held w. the Christian group (so as early as Severian of Gabala [died after 409 A.D.]: KStaab, Pauluskommentare aus. d. griech. Kirche ’33, p. xxxv; 268) is clearly shown by the fact that they had a special place in the room where the Christians assembled 1 Cor 14:16 (PTomson, Paul and the Jewish Law [CRINT III/1] ’90, 142–44; ἀναπληρόω 4).—DELG s.v. ἴδιος.
