The Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales, a grande école located in Paris, is France's top business school. Founded in 1881, it is now (since 2008) part of a larger organisation called "Paris Tech". HEC is run by the Paris Chamber of commerce (see CCI), and is reputed as one of the best business schools in the world, indeed classed top in the Financial Times European business schools league table in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

HEC offers 380 places per year in its first year of study, and with almost 4,000 candidates per year is the Grande école with the most competitive entry. BACCALAURÉAT

The bac, as it is popularly known, is the school leaving examination all French « lycée » students take in their final year. Before beginning their baccalauréat studies, pupils choose a specialization known as a « série », represented by an initial letter: a bac with a scientific bias is known as a « bac S » (for « scientifique ») while an arts-oriented bac is referred to as a « bac L » (for « littéraire »), for example. BACCALAURÉAT

There are three main types (filières) of bac, each corresponding to a specific field: bac L (littéraire) being arts-oriented, bac S (scientifique) science-based and bac ES (économique et social) economics and social studies. Within each domain various obligatory and optional subjects can be combined to give up to eleven different types of diploma. There is also the bac professionnel which offers thirty-eight different specialist or vocational subjects.
