И сцены в суде, снятые весьма традиционно, обогащаются еще одним интересным смысловым подтекстом, поскольку становятся для обвиняемого своеобразной игрой, в которой он узнает истину о покойной: только теперь он начинает различать контуры своей судьбы.Нет никакого сомнения, что этот фильм указал самому Габену и его режиссерам, к какому типу ролей ему лучше было склониться, чтобы не утратить ни достоверности своего персонажа, ни собственной актерской силы. Но для того, чтобы в полной мере переместить звезду Габена из галактики мифологического лиризма 30-х гг. в галактику более мелочного и приземленного реализма 40-50-х гг., Мартену Руманьяку не хватало одного важного фактора: четко определенного социального контекста. Он обладает теми же характерными чертами, что и предыдущие картины: смесью реализма и сновиденческой фантазии в изображении, полубарочностью в построении кадра, нервной и сжатой компоновкой сцен, выстроенных на довольно коротких планах. Город не играет здесь настолько значительной роли, как Нью-Йорк в Обнаженном городе, и все-таки образ Лондона как лабиринта из улочек, лестниц, задних дворов рождает незабываемую атмосферу. Персонаж Фэбиана гениально сыгран Ричардом Уидмарком: он окружен великолепным набором актеров 2-го плана (среди которых Фрэнсис Л. Салливан, чем-то напоминающий Сидни Гринстрита, но в более мрачном варианте). В персонаже Уидмарка Дассен рисует портрет обаятельного, прекрасно выглядящего, умного, одаренного неудачника – «художника, не нашедшего свое искусство», по выражению другого персонажа. Изобретательный, но беззлобный лжец Фэбиан в последний момент проваливает все свои начинания и тянет за собой в пропасть друзей и врагов. Финал фильма приводит к общей катастрофе (самоубийство, разорение, траур и т. д.) всех персонажей, связанных с Фэбианом. Сценарий умело выстроен так, чтобы создать напряжение вокруг этой кажущейся ловкости, обреченной на вечные неудачи. Тем самым Дассен выражает свой глубокий и совершенно неподдельный пессимизм, и, возможно, существует некая символическая и пророческая связь между персонажем Фэбиана и последующим крахом карьеры режиссера. Для Дассена мир не делится на добрых и злодеев. Конечно, злодеи (садисты, извращенцы и пр.) существуют в его творчестве. Но им Дассен противопоставляет не героев в полном смысле слова, а людей слабохарактерных, которых вводят в заблуждение несбыточные мечтания и собственный отрыв от реальности. Впоследствии Дассен замкнется в гуманистических и «позитивных» картинах, хотя он был рожден не для этого. В конце концов окажется, что он смог раскрыть себя только в нескольких мимолетно успешных фильмах, где отчаянный пессимизм жанра нуара соответствовал его инстинктивному видению мира.
