На борт поднимаются аборигены. Флетчер внезапно влюбляется в юную дочь вождя местного племени. Но после идиллического пребывания на этих райских землях жизнь рядом с капитаном Блаем кажется еще более невыносимой. Блай заставляет старого больного судового врача подняться на палубу, где наказывают дезертиров. Старик подчиняется, но теряет сознание и умирает. Снайпер исследует характер маньяка-убийцы и рассматривает его случай, главным образом, под социологическим углом. Фильм показывает параллельно путь убийцы, описанный с бихевиористской точки зрения, и ход расследования. В части, посвященной расследованию, Дэмитрик и его сценаристы устами врача-психиатра заводят разговор о необходимости медицинского наблюдения за подобными людьми сразу же после 1-го ареста. Двойственность структуры приносит больше пользы смыслу фильма, чем его драматургии. В самом деле, сцены расследования постоянно кажутся немного чужеродными, искусственными по сравнению с портретом самого убийцы. Этот портрет, никак не затрагивает прошлое Миллера и не придает его случаю более обобщенный характер, зато много выигрывает от прекрасной и трезвой игры Артура Франца и замечательной работы оператора Бёрнетта Гаффи. Взгляд на Сан-Франциско с высоты крыш визуально весьма оригинален для того времени. С точки зрения поиска ракурсов и освещения, он свидетельствует об удивительном творческом потенциале нуара – жанра, к которому фильм не принадлежит напрямую, но чье влияние чувствуется в форме. Гуманистическая направленность фильмов Креймера находит здесь идеальную поддержку в виде таланта Дэмитрика. Фильм стремится наделить персонажа Артура Франца достоинством и показать его больным, уязвимым, травмированным человеком, который больше нуждается в заботе и внимании, нежели в наказании, ненависти и мести. -
