native authorities give alsoᅠ the following meanings, « driving away evil» ;
« running about andᅠ roaring», fr. ru + dra = 2. dru;

« a praiser, worshipper» = stotṛi Naigh. III, 16);
m. « Roarer orᅠ Howler»
N. of the god of tempests andᅠ father andᅠ ruler of the Rudras andᅠ Maruts
(in the Veda he is closely connected with Indra andᅠ still more with Agni, the god of fire, which, as a destroying agent, rages andᅠ crackles like the roaring storm, andᅠ alsoᅠ with Kāla orᅠ Time the all-consumer, with whom he is afterwards identified;
though generally represented as a destroying deity, whose terrible shafts bring death orᅠ disease on men andᅠ cattle, he has alsoᅠ the epithet ṡiva, « benevolent» orᅠ « auspicious», andᅠ is even supposed to possess healing powers from his chasing away vapours andᅠ purifying the atmosphere;
in the later mythology the word ṡiva, which does not occur as a name in the Veda, was employed, first as an euphemistic epithet andᅠ then as a real name for Rudra, who lost his special connection with storms andᅠ developed into a form of the disintegrating andᅠ reintegrating principle;
while a new class of beings, described as eleven < orᅠ thirty-three> in number, though still called Rudras, took the place of the original Rudras orᅠ Maruts:
in VP. I, 7, Rudra is said to have sprung from Brahmā. 's forehead, andᅠ to have afterwards separated himself into a figure half male andᅠ half female, the former portion separating again into the 11 Rudras,
hence these later Rudras are sometimes regarded as inferior manifestations of Ṡiva, andᅠ most of their names, which are variously given in the different Purāṇas, are alsoᅠ names of Ṡiva;
those of the VāyuP. are Ajai ͡kapad, Ahir-budhnya, Hara, Nirṛita, Īṡvara, Bhuvana, Aṇgāraka, Ardha-ketu, Mṛityu, Sarpa, Kapālin;
accord. toᅠ others the Rudras are represented as children of Kaṡyapa andᅠ Surabhi orᅠ of Brahmā. andᅠ Surabhi orᅠ of Bhūta andᅠ Su-rūpā;
accord. toᅠ VP. I, 8, Rudra is one of the 8 forms of Ṡiva;
elsewhere he is reckoned among the Dik-pālas as regent of the north-east quarter) RV. etc. etc. (cf. RTL. 75 etc..);

N. of an Āditya (in the Veda commonly the night as Mitra over the day, but often celebrated separately, whereas Mitra is rarely invoked alone;
Varuṇa is one of the oldest of the Vedic gods, andᅠ is commonly thought to correspond to the Oὐρανός of the Greeks, although of a more spiritual conception;
he is often regarded as the supreme deity, being then styled « king of the gods» orᅠ « king of both gods andᅠ men» orᅠ « king of the universe» ;
no other deity has such grand attributes andᅠ functions assigned to him;
he is described as fashioning andᅠ upholding heaven andᅠ earth, as possessing extraordinary power andᅠ wisdom called māyā,

in RV. IV, 1, 2, he is even called the brother of Agni;
though not generally regarded in the Veda as a god of the ocean, yet he is often connected with the waters, especially the waters of the atmosphere orᅠ firmament, andᅠ in one place RV. VII, 64, 2 is called with Mitra,
sindhu-pati, « lord of the sea orᅠ of rivers» ;
hence in the later mythology he became a kind of Neptune, andᅠ is there best known in his character of god of the ocean;
in the MBh. Varuṇa is said to be a son of Kardama andᅠ father of Pushkara, andᅠ is alsoᅠ variously represented as one of the Deva-gandharvas, as a Nāga, as a king of the Nagas, andᅠ as an Asura;

m. (wrongly written vaṡishṭha), « the most wealthy»
N. of a celebrated Vedic Ṛishi orᅠ sage (owner of the « cow of plenty», called Nandinī, offspring of Surabhi, which by gransing all desires made him, as his name implies, master of every vasu orᅠ desirable object;
he was the typical representative of Brāhmanical rank, andᅠ the legends of his conflict with Viṡvā-mitra, who raised himself from the kingly orᅠ Kshatriya to the Brāhmanical class, were probably founded on the actual struggles which took place between the Brāhmans andᅠ Kshatriyas;
a great many hymns of the RV. are ascribed to these two great rivals;
those of the seventh Maṇḍala, besides some others, being attributed to Vasishṭha, while those of the third Maṇḍala are assigned to Viṡvā-mitra;
in one of Vasishtha's hymns he is represented as king Su-dās, family priest, an office to which Viṡvā-mitra alsoᅠ aspired;
in another hymn Vasishṭha claims to have been inspired by Varuṇa, andᅠ in another RV. VII, 33, 11 he is called the son of the Apsaras Urvaṡī by Mitra andᅠ Varuṇa, whence his patronymic Maitrāvaruṇi;
in Manu I, 35, he is enumerated among the ten Prajā-patis orᅠ Patriarchs produced by Manu Svāyambhuva for the peopling of the universe;
in the MBh. he is mentioned as the family priest of the solar race orᅠ family of Ikshvāku andᅠ Rāma-candra, andᅠ in the Purāṇas as one of the arrangers of the Vedas in the Dvāpara age;

N. of a Vedic Ṛishi (having the patr. Ājīgarti, as son of Ajigarta orᅠ Ajīgarta, andᅠ regarded as the author of the hymns I, 24-30, IX, 3 ;
accord. toᅠ AitBr. VII, 13-18, king Hariṡcandra, whose priest was Viṡvā-mitra, being childless, made a vow that on obtaining a son he would sacrifice him to the god Varuṇa;
a son was then born to him named Rohita, but Hariṡcandra put off on various pretexts the fulfilment of his vow, andᅠ when he at length consented to perform it, his son refused to be sacrificed,
andᅠ retiring to the forest passed six years there until he met a poor Brāhman Ṛishi named Ajigarta, who had three sons, the second of whom, Ṡunaḥ-ṡepa, was purchased by Rohita for a hundred cows to serve as a substitute for himself;
Varuṇa having accepted him as a ransom, he was about to be sacrificed, Viṡvā-mitra being Hotṛi priest, when he saved himself by reciting verses in praise of various deities, andᅠ was received into the family of Viṡmā-mitra as one of his sons under the name of Deva-rāta q.v.:
the legend is different in the Rāmāyaṇa, which makes Ambarīsha, king of Ayodhya, perform a sacrifice, the victim of which is stolen by Indra;
this king is described as wandering over the earth in search of either the real victim orᅠ a substitute until he meets with a Brāhman named Ṛicika,
from whom he purchases his middle son, Ṡunah-ṡepa, who is about to be sacrificed, when Viṡvā-mitra saves him by teaching him a prayer to Agni andᅠ two hymns to Indra andᅠ Vishṇu;

18 उर्वशी _urvaśī
उर्वशी [उरून् महतो$पि अश्नुते वशीकरोति, उरु-अश्-क गौरा˚ ङीष् Tv.]1 N. of a famous Apsaras or nymph of Indra's heaven who became the wife of Purūravas. [Urvaśī is frequently mentioned in the Ṛigveda; at her sight the seed of Mitra and Varuṇa fell down, from which arose Agastya and Va&siṣṭa; (see Agastya). Being cursed by Mitra and Varuṇa she came down to the world of mortals, and became the wife of Purūravas, whom she chanced to see while descending, and who made a very favourable impression upon her mind. She lived with him for some time, and went up to heaven at the expiration of her curse. Purūravas was sorely grieved at her loss, but succeeded in securing her company once more. She bore him a son named Āyus, and then left him forever. The account given in the Vikramorvaśīyam differs in many respects, where Indra is represented to have favoured Purūra- vas with her lifelong company though he had himself cursed her. Mythologically she is said to have sprung from the thigh of the sage Nārāyaṇa, q. v.] N. of a sacred place referred to in Bhārata.-नाममाला N. of a lexicon.-रमणः, -सहायः, -वल्लभः N. of Purūravas. -
