SUBJECT AREA: Medical technology[br]b. 29 August 1911 Bury, Lancashire, Englandd. 5 August 1982 Lancashire, England[br]English orthopedic surgeon, pioneer of ultra-clean-air operating-theatre environments and of total hip-joint replacement.[br]During his medical training at Manchester he qualified for the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons and obtained his FRCS in 1936, within a year of becoming medically qualified. Following military service as an orthopaedic specialist, he was appointed a consultant at the Manchester Royal Infirmary in 1947.Charnley investigated the problems of joint lubrication using polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and a series of 300 initially successful cases laid the foundation for further developments, involving total hip-joint replacement, when in 1962 high-density polythene became available as a suitable inert material. The need for a totally sterile operating environment in which to carry out such procedures led him to develop ultra-clean-air operating-theatre modules which proved to have wide application in relation to other surgical disciplines and to the problems of hospital building. To further these principles he resigned from the Royal Infirmary and was the guiding spirit in the establishment of the centre for hip surgery at Wrightington Hospital in Lancashire, which gained wide international recognition.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsKnighted 1977. SUBJECT AREA: Medical technology[br]b. 14 February 1914 Leiden, the Netherlands[br]Dutch physician and inventor of the first effective artificial kidney.[br]Kolff studied at Leiden Medical School and qualified in 1938. While studying at Gröningen in 1938, in the utilization of cellulose sausage skin which had become available he designed an artificial kidney, developing the work of Abel in animal experiments. At the outbreak of the Second World War he was banished to a provincial town. Even so, he succeeded in making some clandestine machines, one of which was effective in saving the life of a patient with acute renal failure. During 1950–67 he continued in general practice and at the University of Leiden, and in 1958–67 he was head of department and Professor of the Division of Artificial Organs at the University of Utah College of Medicine, Salt Lake City, USA. He was decorated for his services in the establishment of blood banks in Holland during the war.[br]Bibliography1944, "The artificial kidney: dialyser with great area", Acta. Med. 26 Türck, Ludwig
SUBJECT AREA: Medical technology[br]b. 22 July 1810 Vienna, Austriad. 25 February 1868 Vienna, Austria[br]Austrian neurologist, developer of the techniques of laryngoscopy.[br]The son of a wealthy jeweller, he attended medical school in Vienna and qualified in 1836. Until 1844 he was engaged in research into the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system. In 1844, while on a visit to Paris, he came to the attention of Baron Türckheim, Director of the General Hospital in Vienna. The consequence was the establishment of a special division of the hospital for nervous diseases, with Türck in charge. In 1857 he was appointed Chief Physician to the largest hospital in Vienna and at the same time he became aware of the invention in 1855 by Manuel García, a music teacher of Paris, of a practical laryngoscope. Türck adapted the apparatus to clinical purposes and proceeded to establish the diagnostic and therapeutic techniques required for its efficient use. Some conflict over priority ensued following a publication by Johann Nepomuk Czermak in 1858, but eventually a professional declaration asserted Türck's priority.[br]Bibliography1862, Recherches cliniques sur diverses maladies du larynx, de la trachée et du pharynx étudiées à l'aide du laryngoscope, Paris.Papers in Allgemein.
